Me: Hi everyone, good afternoon from the Pacific Bay area and TGIF! Hope you are well. And if you aren't well, well........
The Golden Bachelor celebrates finding love in your golden years — but the new star isn’t interested in dating anyone his own age.
Mel Owens, the leading man of the upcoming season of ABC‘s senior dating show, warned an executive producer about the women on his season, “If they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them,” he tells the sports podcast In the Trenches. He adds that during the casting process, he told producers he preferred women aged “45 to 60… just being honest.” (Owens, for the record, is 66 years old.)
“This is not The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor,” Owens declares, while noting that when he’s looking for a woman to date, “they’ve got to be fit, because I stay in shape and work out and stuff. And I told [the producers] to try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs.” (TVLine has reached out to ABC for comment.)
The Golden Bachelor, which debuted in the fall of 2023, is a spinoff of ABC’s Bachelor franchise that typically features singles age 60 and over. (The women competing on Owens’ season have not been announced yet.) Season 1 saw star Gerry Turner propose to Theresa Nist, but the two split up after just three months of marriage.
Owens was a star linebacker at the University of Michigan and was drafted ninth overall in the first round of the 1981 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He played nine seasons for the Rams and then switched gears after retirement, passing the bar and becoming a lawyer based in Orange County, California. Owens got married and had two sons, but he and his wife later divorced.
What was Jeopardy........Before Jeopardy!?
lex Trebek‘s first pilot rehearsal video for Jeopardy! has resurfaced online, and fans can’t help but notice how the beloved star kept getting irritable while filming!
The fascinating video from 1983 shows just how much the show has changed in appearance over the years, from graphics to the set and more. But it’s still essentially the same Jeopardy! that viewers know and love today.
Back then contestants’ names were written on the podiums instead of on the screen, and their dollar amounts were in lights instead of on a screen. The Jeopardy! logo was yellow and more pushed together. The buzzer sound resembled a doorbell.
The amounts ranged from $25 to $125, and the screens were not digital. The clues flipped around on slides instead. For the Daily Doubles, a bell chimed instead of the usual music.
A black, curly-haired Trebek stood at his podium in a tan blazer, brown shirt, and black pants. He got annoyed when his microphone didn’t work on one of the clues. He also wasn’t a fan of one of the contestants correcting him. Carlo was in the lead with $1,125 when he picked the category “Journalism” for $100.
Trebek said, “Brand new category” and started to read off a clue that wasn’t shown on the board. In the middle of him talking, Carlo interrupted him and said, “I said journalism. They pulled journalism.”
“Oh, what the hell am I doing? I thought you said ‘Birds,'” the host replied. “Jesus Christ.” He then proceeded to read off the correct clue. After the answer was given, Trebek scolded Carlo.
“Why didn’t you say ‘Birds?'” he asked. “I had it in my mind that you were going to say ‘Birds,’ so next time say ‘Birds.'”
On the next clue, Carlo said “Journalism” really slowly with a laugh.
“Oh, that’s the way you’re going to be?” Trebek asked.
During Double Jeopardy, Trebek seemed annoyed when one of the producers asked him to do his lines again. He asked them to zoom out and show the full clue board as he introduced the categories.
Reddit users shared the video on the platform and pointed out how annoyed the host was. “Rehearsal for Alex Trebek’s first pilot episode in 1983, with a radically different (and much lower-tech) set than what we eventually saw when the show aired a year later. Also, check out annoyed Alex!!” the poster said.
Strictly Come down with the Shingles
Rylee Arnold shared a not-so-pleasant update about her health ahead of the new season of Dancing With the Stars.
“So turns out you can get shingles as a 20-year-old 😭,” Arnold captioned a TikTok video of herself dancing in her car on Wednesday, June 25. “Any tips or recommendations are heavily needed right now 🥰.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, shingles is a “viral infection that causes a painful rash” anywhere on the body and is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. “After you’ve had chickenpox, the virus stays in your body for the rest of your life,” reads Mayo Clinic’s website. “Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles.”
Arnold did not go into further detail about her diagnosis but received several messages of support from fans in the post’s comments. “I’m so sorry you [are] dealing with this!” one user wrote. “Stay hydrated, rest up, and try to keep your stress levels low. Hope you feel better soon!”
Other fans shared their own similar experiences. “I got shingles at 19, it was all down my [spine] and left hip,” another user commented. “Was sooo painful barely couldn’t move do not scratch them, stay hydrated, and take medication took 2 weeks to feel half decent.”
Arnold has been candid about her health ups and downs with fans via social media since making her DWTS pro debut during Season 32 in 2023. “Pursuing my dreams of being a dancer didn’t have to stop when I was diagnosed with Type 1!” Arnold, who was diagnosed with diabetes at age 15, wrote via Instagram in November 2024. “Every day, I move my body and work on my skills to continue to push myself to be the best dancer I can be!”
She continued, “I hope to inspire others to know that with the right technology and support system, you can achieve all of your dreams—I’m living proof of that as I step onto the DWTS stage in pursuit of that Mirrorball trophy!”
Earlier this year, Arnold had to step away from the DWTS: Live tour after spraining her ankle during a March show in Salt Lake City, Utah. “Sadly, my doctor did not okay me to get back to dancing right now, and I will not be returning for the extension of the tour, which is just so sad,” she explained in an April 8 Instagram video. “I’m going to be resting and healing at this time to make sure that my ankle properly gets healed and returns back to the way it was.”
ABC has not announced which DWTS pros will return for Season 34. TV personality and conservationist Robert Irwin and social media star Alix Earle are two of the celebrities who will compete for the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy this fall. No additional casting has been revealed.
Jeopardy! crew members are sharing shows secrets and taking fans backstage in a new YouTube video that gives a closer look at the contestants’ podiums, and more.
YouTube creator Dallas Taylor toured the Sony Picture Studio Lot with Jeopardy! sound technicians to see the ins and outs of the game show. The first stop was a look at the audience and judges’ seats. Production Sound Mixer Carlos Torres said that the set can hold 100 to 150 people. There are microphones placed above them on the ceiling to capture their reactions.
He then showed off the podiums. There is a mechanism on the floor that can be adjusted according to the contestant’s height. Torres showed that it doesn’t take a lot of effort to press the buzzer. The podiums have speakers so the contestants can hear sound effects for audio clues.
Host Ken Jennings‘ podium is a veritable box of tricks with a few more buttons than the contestants’. The button on the right allows him to press it if a contestant is taking too long to answer and the beeping sound will go off. He had a red light that lights up when it is time to move on or go to a commercial. Jennings’ podium has two screens on it — One with all of the clues and one that plays video clues. Torres shared that the host also likes to use paper for his lines.
Torres revealed the spot that Jennings walks out from when announcer Johnny Gilbert calls his name. The crew member revealed that since Gilbert is 96, he works from home. He just records audio for each show with the contestants’ names, and they add it in post-production.
Mitch Trueg, the floor manager, shared that each crew member wears headsets and wireless microphones to communicate with each other. Trueg shared that there is only four crew members involved with Jeopardy! and they all get along well and make sure the show flows.
As Torres showed off where the sound is connected to, a cutout of a young Ken Jennings with a birthday hat hung on the wall. He then showed off the many organized wires that make sure the sound comes through the studio.
Ric Teller, the Front of House Mixer, had been with Jeopardy! since the pilot. He revealed that all of the individual monitors on the game board were attached to slide projectors when he first started. He showed off the sound board and how he has to be careful with the controls, especially when a contestant talks low. However, he can lower the other two contestants’ microphones if one is speaking just by adjusting one control. Sometimes a producer will interpt Jennings if the sound is off and will tell him to do the bit again.
After the tour of the set was done, Torres took Taylor even further backstage to show off the Jeopardy! Museum. There is a huge glass display of the game show’s Emmy Awards, as well as a Lego model of the set. Alex Trebek‘s podium is also in the museum, which is now preserved in glass, and featured his glasses, a crayon, and a sheet of clues he crossed off, and the music sheet for the Jeopardy! theme song by Merv Griffin, which Torres said he made $100 million on.
There's a new quiz show on the block vying for viewers with the likes of Pointless, Only Connect and The 1% Club but this time it's the celebrities who are being put to the test.
Channel 5 is launching Celebrity Puzzling which pits famous faces against each other for a high stakes battle of logic and wordplay.
