Game shows, previously awarded in the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Emmy competition, will now be part of the Primetime Emmys beginning in 2023, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and NATAS announced on Wednesday.
The news comes on the heels of both organizations announcing a major realignment in December, shifting to genre-based awards rather than time-based awards as part of an effort to ensure the competitions' continued relevance.
The new Emmy category for outstanding game show will be awarded to the programs with "game elements that primarily take place in studio and involve mental challenges," according to the organization. The new outstanding host for a game show category will be "awarded to the 'master of ceremony' host(s) for a continuing performance in a game show," reads the release.
Game shows migrating to the Primetime Emmys will have an 18-month eligibility window from Jan. 1 2022 to May 31, 2023. The Primetime Emmy outstanding competition program category, which awards shows with skill-based competitions, will be renamed to outstanding reality competition program to avoid any confusion.

As Dancing With the Stars prepares for its big streaming debut on Disney+ September 9, fans can look forward to a new format as the show goes ad-free on the platform.
Yes, the long-running competition show will air undisrupted by commercials in its new home, according to TV Line. Season 31 of the reality show will look a little different as the entire run will be free of ad breaks. Disney+ doesn't currently feature commercials, but beginning on Thursday, December 8 the streamer will launch its ad-supported tier known as Disney+ Basic.
TVLine has learned exclusively that Season 31 of the reality competition will feature no commercials for the entirety of its run. The news comes one day after Disney+ announced the rollout of its tiered subscription prices; the streamer's ad-supported tier, which will be known as Disney+ Basic, won't launch until Thursday, Dec. 8, which is about two weeks after Dancing With the Stars' fall cycles typically end.
DWTS' move to Disney+ was first announced in April, following a whopping 30 seasons on the Alphabet Net starting in 2005.
"Dancing with the Stars has entertained fans for 16 years on ABC, and we are excited to bring this beloved show exclusively to Disney+ as the platform's first-ever live series," Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution Chairman Kareem Daniel said at the time. "The show's broad appeal, as well as the overwhelming popularity of its Disney-themed competition nights, make Disney+ the perfect home for Dancing with the Stars while continuing to expand our demographic reach."
Season 31 will mark Disney+'s first attempt at weekly live programming, though the streamer did experiment with live content back in June, when it broadcast Walt Disney World's Harmonious Live! fireworks display from Epcot. Disney+ has also already ordered Season 32 of Dancing With the Stars; a premiere timetable is TBA.
As reported in July, Alfonso Ribeiro is joining as a co-host alongside Tyra Banks for Season 31. Banks returns for her third season as host and executive producer, and the judging panel will return intact as well, with Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough all coming back for the inaugural Disney+ season.
Dancing With the Stars' Season 31 cast will be announced Thursday, Sept. 8 on Good Morning America.

Meanwhile...............
The dreaded post-merger Warner Bros Discovery layoffs have reached the programming operation overseen by HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys. Overall, 14% of staff — about 70 people — are being laid off Monday, the vast majority of them on the Max side. That includes in Max Non-Fiction Originals, International, Acquisitions, Casting and previously reported Live-Action Family Originals, which are all being either scaled back significantly or essentially eliminated, leading to the departure of the bulk of the the staffs, led by Jennifer O'Connell EVP, Non-Fiction & Live-Action Family Originals for HBO Max; Jennifer Kim, SVP, International Originals for HBO Max; Michael Quigley, EVP of Content Acquisitions at HBO Max; and Linda Lowy, EVP Casting for WarnerMedia's HBO Max, TNT, TBS and truTV.
The cuts of Max Original reality, International, Acquisitions and Casting are not surprising. With the pending merger of HBO Max and non-fiction Discovery+ into one platform, HBO Max had already paused new development of unscripted series. O'Connell's other area at HBO Max and Live-Action Family Originals also recently was put on hold.
Going forward, existing Max unscripted series will continue or premiere as planned and, if they are performing well, will stay on. There will just be no new development in light of the large volume of non-fiction fare that will come from Discovery+ when the two services are merged next summer.
HBO Max's reality slate includes shows such as Selena + Chef, which has been renewed for a fourth season; FBoy Island, which is airing its second season; and Legendary, which recently premiered its third season. The move will be a blow for the unscripted community as HBO Max was known to pay between $1.5 million-$2 million per episode of some of its unscripted shows, well above Discovery's usual tariffs, which generally go as high as around $500,000 per hour.

RuPaul's Drag Race is about to make herstory. Again.
The long-running competition series has been renewed for Season 15, which will put Drag Race over 200 total episodes. VH1 has also ordered another season of Untucked, which will air directly after new episodes of Drag Race on Friday nights.
"When I hear season 15 of RuPaul's Drag Race, I have to pinch myself — I just won't tell you where," host and executive producer RuPaul says in a statement. "We never take for granted the opportunity we've been given to showcase drag excellence and tell authentic queer stories. Thank you to the fans, World of Wonder, VH1, our cast and crew, and most of all, our brave and beautiful queens."
Drag Race wrapped its first-ever all-winners edition of All Stars on Paramount+ in July, with Jinkx Monsoon being crowned the franchise's inaugural Queen of All Queens. Original flavor Drag Race concluded its 14th season on VH1 in April, when Willow Pill emerged victorious. New episodes of RuPaul's Secret Celebrity Drag Race currently air Fridays at 8/7c on VH1.

Who is Queen Anne?
Anne continued to reign as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland until her death in 1714.

Brief PSA:
This will be a cerebral battle instead of having them throw chairs, go through tables or fall down out of nowhere from a ladder. Wouldn't that be cool? Even KenJen would've been a special guest referee and turn it into a PPV event. Oh, I'm sorry, where were we?

There have been many interactive characters in the game show world. Mikey from Nick Arcade, the Gaunlet of Villians from Whew!, 2-XL from Pick your Brain and the newest entry.....................
The Person Place or Thing bird. It's more interactive and can react to the game at will. but the show is already on a trial run on most Fox Stations. Maybe if it gets the approval for a full season, I do not know what's about to happen.
The bird is more animated than the Malcolm pilot back in 1983 and you never know when he'll might show up like...............
And if the NFL season rolls around, he may react to big plays, but....................
He has a family dangit. Now as to why Whew!'s rulebook was so complex....................
