The Italian version of Simon Cowell’s singing contest The X Factor has scrapped gender and age categories for performers for the first time in the show’s 17-year history.
When the Fremantle and Syco show returns to Comcast-owned Sky Italia in September, contestants will be divided into “heterogeneous” teams and will be mentored by one of the four judges: Emma, Hell Raton, Manuel Agnelli, and Mika. Each judge must have at least one soloist and one band on their team.
Antonella d’Errico, executive vice president of programming at Sky Italia, said: “By removing the historical division by categories, X Factor welcomes change and wants to become a torchbearer and, in a world that no longer needs to make distinctions of gender or age, talent is for us a neutral noun. We will ask all the contestants of this year’s edition to bring the only thing they really need: their personal, unique X Factor.”
Fremantle Italy CEO Gabriele Immirzi added: “We are in fact the first X Factor in the world to change a historic and characterizing element of the format that today, in 2021, according with Syco Entertainment, we feel is not up-to-date with the reality of everyday life, especially the life of the generations who participate in X Factor. We want to support the growth of music talents without labels and distinctions other than the value and artistic quality of their projects.”
The X Factor first launched in the UK in 2004 and has traditionally divided contestants into four groups by gender, age, and whether they perform alone or are in a band.

Mayim Bialik is dishing on all things “Jeopardy!” ahead of her guest-hosting gig that will begin on Monday.
During a short video posted on the official “Jeopardy!” YouTube channel Saturday, the former “Big Bang Theory” star, who also holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience, talked about the sartorial choices she made on the show in an exclusive interview.
“This is actually something that I felt instantly really passionate about,” she said. “Much as women are accomplished in many fields and we’ve made so many changes in how we are represented and how we are seen, it’s by in large a confusing time I think still for women in terms of what we’re expected to look like and what people think when we dress a certain way or don’t.”
For Bialik, 45, however, she had a certain aesthetic in her mind when it came to choosing her wardrobe for her stint as a guest host.
“I really just wanted to look like the academic that I was trained to be,” she explained. “And to me, that does mean a certain amount of formality and decorum. And also in great respect to Alex Trebek, the image I have of him is in a suit, it’s ‘blazer’d’ up.”
She was able to find her own version of how she perceived the late Alex Trebek’s style, adding, “Not because I’m trying to look like a man, or because I want to look masculine, I wanted to choose things that were flattering and that I feel comfortable in and as an actress, you almost never get to have those things. And I also wanted to bring a little bit of flair, but not too much.”
