Open Revolving Door Season
California Governor Gavin Newsom released on Friday his long-awaited guidelines for restarting film and TV production in the state amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Oddly, they were not presented at Newsom's noon press conference, but later in the day.
The California Department of Public Health released guidance as follows:
Music, TV and film production may resume in California, recommended no sooner than June 12, 2020 and subject to approval by county public health officers within the jurisdictions of operations following their review of local epidemiological data including cases per 100,000 population, rate of test positivity, and local preparedness to support a health care surge, vulnerable populations, contact tracing and testing. To reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, productions, cast, crew and other industry workers should abide by safety protocols agreed by labor and management, which may be further enhanced by county public health officers. Back office staff and management should adhere to Office Workspace guidelines published by the California Department of Public Health and the California Department of Industrial Relations, to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
The reopening for production may not include L.A. County, however. Newsom has said modifications to regional guidance would be allowed so long as there are attestations at the county level that there are adequate plans in place should a rise in COVID cases be seen again. As of late May, 47 of the 58 counties had made such attestations.
Most notably, L.A. county was not among them which, of course, has a huge impact on production. The governor said in May his health director has been working with L.A. County Health Director Barbara Ferrer and may consider opening some parts of the county sooner than others. Whether or not that would include reopening for production remains to be seen.
We'll give you more developments once they become available. I'm gonna go run out to Dollar General past the camera guy to get a Mountain Dew but in the meantime......

few weeks after an internal NBC investigation found no wrongdoing on the part of America's Got Talent regarding Gabrielle Union's allegations of racism, the former judge is laying the ground for suing the show's network, production companies and Simon Cowell.
Union filed a complaint with California's Department of Fair Employment and Housing against Cowell, NBC Universal, Fremantle Productions and Syco, New York magazine's Yashar Ali tweeted Thursday. The document concerns Union's allegations of racial insensitivity and sexism on set, with which she went public in 2019 after news broke that she and Julianne Hough — who'd both joined AGT as judges in Season 14 — would not be returning for Season 15.
Variety reported at the time that the pair had been subject to a "toxic culture" at the show, including excessive notes on their appearance (including a specific critique that Union's hairstyles were "too black"). Union also reportedly clashed with producers about a contestant whose material she found racially insensitive. (Said performer ultimately was allowed to try out, though his audition was later cut from the final broadcast.)
NBC announced in December that it had commissioned a third-party investigation in response to Union's claims. In May, the network, along with Fremantle and Syco, put out the following statement based on the findings of the independent investigation, which concluded that "no one associated with the show made any insensitive or derogatory remarks about Ms. Union's appearance, and that neither race nor gender was a contributing factor in the advancement or elimination of contestants at any time." That said, the investigation "highlighted some areas in which reporting processes could be improved."
UPDATE: In a statement, a rep for NBC says, "The allegation that anyone involved in this process threatened Ms. Union is categorically untrue. We took Ms. Union's concerns seriously, and engaged an outside investigator who found an overarching culture of diversity on the show. NBCUniversal remains committed to creating an inclusive and supportive working environment where people of all backgrounds are treated with respect."
TVLine has reached out to representatives for Union, Cowell, Fremantle and Syco for comment.
The complaint also alleges that NBC Entertainment chairman Paul Telegdy "threatened Union through her agent and warned Union's agent that Union had better cease from pursuing her claims of racism while filming AGT."
In a follow-up statement Thursday, Union's lawyer Bryan Freedman stated that NBC "did not care enough to either promptly investigate Ms. Union's complaints or even ask HR to get involved. Rather, NBC stood against her and directed its 'outrage' at Ms. Union for whistleblowing about the racially offensive conduct she experienced while working for NBC on America's Got Talent."
Netflix will be moving a whole lotta sewing machines into storage: The streamer has cancelled its competition series Next in Fashion after just one season.
Queer Eye's fashion expert Tan France, who co-hosted the show, first broke the news to our sister publication Variety. "This is a one-season show, we don't know what will happen in the future," he said. "But it was honestly one of the proudest things I've ever worked on. I love the show and [co-host] Alexa [Chung] so much. My focus is definitely on Queer Eye and moving forward with that." (Queer Eye returns to Netflix for Season 5 on June 5.)
Next in Fashion, which dropped on Netflix back in January, featured 18 innovative designers who competed for a $250,000 prize and the chance to launch a clothing line with luxury fashion retailer Net-a-Porter. South Korean designer Minju Kim was crowned the first — and now only — winner in the series finale.

This quiz show will go into reruns next week.
Q: What is Jeopardy!?
Jeopardy! will soon be in all-encore mode.
TVLine reports that the iconic Alex Trebek-hosted game show — which halted production roughy three months ago due to the coronavirus pandemic — will air its last original episode on Friday, June 12. Reruns begin airing on Monday, June 15 and will continue until the show deems it safe to resume production.
The syndicated phenom was able to delay running out of new episodes by rebroadcasting the primetime Greatest of All Time tournament during the first two weeks of May (bookended by reruns of champ Ken Jennings' first and last episodes from his legendary 74-game winning streak).
Jeopardy!'s two-week Teachers Tournament, production of which was completed just prior to the shutdown, concludes tonight.
A decision on when to restart production on Jeopardy! is further complicated by Trebek's immunocompromised condition; the multi-Emmy winner is currently battling Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
In January, Trebek told reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that he has no plans to sign off of the long-running quiz show "in the near future." Two months later, he announced that he had beaten the one-year survival rate for the disease. "The one-year survival rate for Stage 4 pancreatic cancer patients is 18 percent," he said.. "I'm very happy to report that I have just reached that marker."
Meanwhile, fellow Sony-produced game show Wheel of Fortune — which airs immediately following Jeopardy! in many U.S. markets — will continue to mix new episodes with reruns throughout the summer, according to a studio insider.
And here's something to laugh about....
TBS is serving up the ultimate comedic match with a seven-episode greenlight for Tournament of Laughs, set to premiere on Sunday, June 21 at 10:00pm ET/PT. Hosted by Jason Sudeikis (We're The Millers, Saturday Night Live), the series will present 32 comedians facing off in a hilarious, single-elimination bracket-style tournament, with each episode featuring multiple match-ups. The comics will go head-to-head virtually to out-funny one another with Sudeikis acting as the master of ceremonies and providing color commentary.
"We may be without some of our favorite sports right now but we can still partake in some fierce rivalries" said Brett Weitz, General Manager of TNT, TBS, and truTV. "These comics promise to bring the funny each week, but the audience will get to decide who gets the last laugh."
Featured comedians include Jeff Ross, Margaret Cho, Gilbert Gottfried, Judah Friedlander, Michael Rapaport, Jim Norton, Fortune Feimster, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Natasha Leggero, Cameron Esposito, Godfrey, The Sklar Brothers, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Josh Wolf, Clayton English, Yamaneika Saunders, Gina Yashere, Tim Dillon, Moshe Kasher, Jessica Kirson, Paul Rodriguez, Sarah Tiana, Matteo Lane, Beth Stelling, Vladimir Caamano, Ian Edwards, Aida Rodriguez, Megan Gailey, Preacher Lawson, Piff The Magic Dragon and an additional two performers to come.
Each week the comics will create, produce, self-film, and star in their own videos - from stand-up sets to song parodies and everything in-between. After the episode has aired, the home audience will decide who moves forward, via phone and online voting, with the winning comics returning for the next round. The final episode will feature an expert comedy panel charged with crowning a winner in the championship match-up for the last laugh and bragging rights as tournament champion.
In addition, a charitable donation will be made to the United Nations Foundation's COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and Black Lives Matter.
Tournament of Laughs is produced by The Jay & Tony Show with Jay Blumenfield, Tony Marsh and Pip Wells serving as executive producers. Wells will also serve as showrunner.
After a week off, it's the Mistplay Game Break.
When we first gathered at the park today,I brought along an old 1970s Smith Corona typewriter. What I would like for you to do is to finish the lyric to a well known song. Sounds simple. Right? Right.
First, I'll type in the line to this song by contemporary christian artist Amy Grant lke this....
"And ever since the day you put my heart in motion..."
Take a moment and then complete the lyric after we take a look at this Pandora song break from The Goons. First time on the blog, they put a nostalgia trip to a modern sound people young and old will enjoy for years to come. Watch as this trio take you back to 1986....or something like that with an original we're sure to enjoy.

now that's love. One more.......I thought for a very long time about this post. I feel that my voice is not the one that needs to be heard right now, but silence is a statement. I'm trying to find the balance between adding my voice to the resounding call for change without overshadowing anyone else's voice. Staying silent is no longer an option. When I became a mother I was suddenly painfully aware of one aspect of my privilege. While all mothers worry about their children, I will never have to worry about mine in the same way a mother of black children will. That is not fair. I realize that is simply one tiny aspect of a rampant, systemic problem and I am constantly learning and trying to reflect on my own role in that system. As painful as it is, we MUST face the problem. We MUST speak. We MUST do better. We MUST be better. Lives depend on it. . . . . . #justiceforgeorgefloyd #georgefloyd #justiceforfloyd #icantbreathe #endpolicebrutality #nojusticenopeace #systemicracism #blacklivesmatter #racisminamerica #racismisreal #naacp #whiteprivilege #fighthatewithlove #socialinjustice #stopracism #fighthate #whitesilenceisviolence #walkwithus #crayola #sayitcolorfully #michaelsstores #makeitwithmichaels #chalkart #selftaughtartist #motherartist #artistmom #orlando #orlandodoesntsuck #winterpark #caseydrakemakes
