Meet the luckiest man in America.
The first trailer for IFC Films' drama depicts the 1984 Press Your Luck game show scandal.
Based on a true story, The Luckiest Man in America follows unemployed ice cream truck driver Michael Larson (Paul Walter Hauser) as he becomes a contestant on Press Your Luck, all while "harboring a big secret: the key to endless amounts of money," a synopsis teases.
In the trailer, Larson begins to raise suspicion on the game show as he quickly racks up thousands of dollars. Host Peter Tomarken (The White Lotus star Walton Goggins) watches in amazement. However, executives behind the scenes aren't as thrilled, with Press Your Luck co-creator Bill Carruthers (David Strathairn) saying, "We have a problem. Somebody didn't vet this guy."
Directed by Samir Oliveros and written by both Oliveros and Maggie Briggs, the movie follows the scandal in which Larson won a record-breaking total of $110,237 (equivalent to $333,642 in 2024). Hauser is joined by Shamier Anderson, Maisie Williams, Patti Harrison, Brian Geraghty, Haley Bennett and Johnny Knoxville in the cast.
"I'm so pleased to see this movie making its way to audiences, because it really does feel like one of a kind," Hauser, 38, tells PEOPLE. "Not only do I love our weird and wonderful time capsule of a film, but it was made by one of the best cast and crews I've ever worked with."

Blood of her father is a book released in January of this year. It's the 5th in the final series called Ashes of Enteca.
Isonei. Born the bastard daughter of a tyrant king, Isonei took power to save her people from her father’s madness and ambition; however, the young queen of Zhretien must now learn to rule a world where truths are complicated, and motives are anything but clear.
Careline. Married to a king to protect her family, she is now relegated to the position of the queen’s most hated councilor. With her family’s security slipping further and further from her grasp, she must forge a new path to the power and safety she’s spent her whole life seeking.
But when palace politics spill over into Isonei’s royal heartbreak and result in a severe economic crisis for the people of Zhretien, these two women must find common ground and form an alliance to secure Isonei’s right to rule—not only her kingdom, but her thoughts, her choices… and even her very life.
Can two enemies work together, or will they forever be divided by the blood of her father?

Comedic culinary competition “Gastronauts” has been renewed for Season 2 at indie streamer Dropout.
Hosted by comedian and Dropout staple Jordan Myrick, the show features a rotating group of three comedians each episode, who all have “specific, ridiculous” culinary challenges for each episode’s group of chefs.
Among several of the new chefs set up for the challenge in Season 2 are Amanda Palomino (“Chopped,” “Hell’s Kitchen”), Saransh Oberoi (“Beat Bobby Flay”), Christina Xenos (“Chopped”) and Joi Fowler (“Masterchef”).
Guest comedians serving as judges throughout the season include Cameron Esposito, Paul F. Tompkins, Emily Axford, Siobhan Thompson, Katie Marovitch, Erika Ishii, and Scott Aukerman.

Believe it or not, Temptation Island predates The Bachelor, a.k.a. the pinnacle of reality TV dating. Unlike The Bachelor, however, Temptation Island had a decade-plus hiatus before getting a revival and bouncing between multiple networks.
Temptation Island debuted on Fox in 2001, running three seasons before concluding in September 2003. It stayed dormant until USA revived the series in 2019, with another five-season run concluding in 2023. Now, Temptation Island is jetsetting to Netflix, which, between Love Is Blind, The Ultimatum, and Love On the Spectrum, is becoming the go-to streamer for reality dating.
Despite spanning 24 years and three networks, Temptation Island has been remarkably consistent since its debut. In addition to maintaining the same host, Mark L. Walberg, the premise has remained mostly unchanged.
It works like this: Four unmarried couples unsure of their future are sent to a tropical paradise, where they're separated and thrown into a snake pit of singles eager to break them up. It's a pretty nefarious concept, one that's produced some genuinely compelling moments of drama.

As "Top Chef" Destination Canada is set to premiere, the anticipation for that first episode hits a peak. It is more than the new batch of cheftestants or wondering who can keep Tom Colicchio from being grumpy during judging. The reason why "Top Chef" Season 22 will continue the Bravo program’s success is its deeply rooted connection to the audience.
Season after season, "Top Chef" exceeds expectations. While there will always be a “pack your knives and go” moment, it is all the other little elements that keep viewers engaged. That connection extends the “you are Top Chef” announcement. From fans rushing to book a reservation at a chef’s restaurant or heading to a locale featured on the show, "Top Chef" continues to succeed in creating immersive moments.

The Box is opening in another territory after TF1 snapped up the competition reality show.
The French broadcaster becomes the latest buyer of the Norwegian format, which sees celebs exit a yellow box to face an unknown challenge.
It is hard for new formats to break through, but sometimes a show comes along and grabs international attention, which has been the case with The Box.
The show was created by Norwegian producer Seefood. In an unusual move, it is selling the show itself rather than handing it off to one of the major format distributors. The sales strategy has proved successful, with a flurry of deals for the format. Seefood has closed ten deals for the show, including with ITV in the UK.
The show launched on TV2 in Norway, with a second season recently greenlit. The format sees 12 celebrity contestants locked into bright yellow containers. They have no idea of the challenge or game they will face the moment the container opens. The one who overcomes the greatest number of unknown challenges is declared the winner of The Box.

The Drag Race family continues to expand and World of Wonder has greenlit Drag Race Philippines: Slaysian Royale, a new show based on the Vs. the World format.
Drag Race Philippines: Slaysian Royale will see fan-favorite queens from previous seasons of the Philippines franchise take on Asian queens from across the global franchise in a battle for the crown.
“This new version of Drag Race shines a spotlight on Asian drag as never before, celebrating its culture, its history and creativity in a unique battle royale,” Co-Founders of World of Wonder, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, said.
Slaysian Royale builds on Drag Race Philippines, which, across its three seasons, has made a name for itself for its unique take on fan-favorite challenges and tropes. Most recently, reigning season three winner Maxie won the title of the Philippines’ Drag Superstar, joining the Winner’s Circle alongside previously crowned queens Precious Paula Nicole and Captivating Katkat.
Drag Race Philippines: Slaysian Royale is set to premiere worldwide exclusively on WOW Presents Plus later this year. The competition is produced in the Philippines by Fullhouse Asia Production Studios, Inc. in conjunction with World of Wonder Productions, Inc. Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, Tom Campbell, RuPaul Charles, Alex Godinez-Lopez, and Maricel Ticar Santos serve as executive producers..

Tokyo Broadcasting System Television (TBS) has announced new gameshow Infinite Loop, the first unscripted show it has coproduced with South Korean entertainment company CJ ENM.
Featuring Koko of K-pop girl group Izna, it sees six contestants locked in a confined hexagon-shaped space where they face a series of high-stakes missions in a battle to win a cash prize.
The project arises from the strategic partnership agreed by CJ ENM and TBS in 2021, which sees both companies collaborate to expand their content portfolios.
Based on a concept provided by CJ ENM, Infinite Loop will premiere on TBS on March 24.
Jangho Seo, exec VP, content business division at CJ ENM, said: “As more and more Korean unscripted shows are well received on a global scale, it has become crucial for both content providers and creators to discover distinctive yet comprehensible ideas that can foster the viewers’ interests.
“Infinite Loop is a big yet clear-cut show that will propose a clear answer to those challenges.” Jun Fukai, director, global sales and development at TBS Holdings, said: “Korean producers made numerous visits to Japan, engaging in extensive creative meetings to refine every detail, ultimately bringing this ground-breaking show to life.
“While Infinite Loop will first air in Japan, we are confident that audiences worldwide will be captivated by its unique appeal.”

And it's time for a Mistplay Game Break. Time for some trivia.
And now, comedienne Holly Perkins goes into the mind of what goes down in the world of movies, music and more. It's......Last week in Holly's Pop Culture Brain. Text edition.
I actually watched The Oscars last night! It is kind of crazy that the ceremony happens down the street from me. I went to an 11am screening of All About Eve, a movie I’d never seen before, and it was the perfect movie for Oscar day. Bette Davis is phenomenal! The film won Best Picture in 1950, and the subject matter is so spot-on for Hollywood, even 75 (!!) years later. I’m always baffled at how movies from that time can feel so modern. It did make me sigh a little thinking at how cinema quality has diminished so much from telling these sorts of stories to where we are now.
Leaving The Egyptian theatre, I could see the red carpet set up on Hollywood Boulevard and tinted SUVs lining up. Earlier that day, I’d seen a man passed out on the street with his whole entire ass out, so a very full-circle Los Angeles day!
Anyways, I have lots of thoughts about The Academy Awards and by Thursday I will have forgotten them all so I got up two hours early to send out a special early edition¹ of Perk Culture.
The Ceremony
I thought Conan did a fantastic job hosting. I’ve seen mixed reviews, and by that I mean angry woke white guys on Twitter (I refuse to call it “X”) saying it was”97% unfunny”. Maybe I just like Conan because he gave me one of the funniest things to ever happen and my comfort clip that I watch until I cry anytime I’m sad, but I liked him as the host! I enjoyed the little bits, including Adam Sandler wearing an Aviator Nation hoodie. I’ve seen people saying him wearing a sky blue hoodie and getting close to Timotheé Chalamet in his yellow suit was a subtle nod to Ukraine and to me that feels bigger than a Sally O’Malley streeeeeeetch. It was a simple coincidence, if that even. I stand with Ukraine but c’mon…we’re getting ridiculous with the fashion conspiracies.
Now, I’m gonna try to be as nice as I can be here but the James Bond thing was a huge miss. I thought maybe the sound mixing was just bad, a mic error, acoustics, something wrong with the raw vocals, anything to explain why Doja Cat and Raye sounded like bad American Idol auditions, but then Queen Latifah showed up later and proved the sound system was working just fine! Her range is fit for the stage and not everyone’s is. It’s hard to live up to the Bond song legacies and we aren’t all Adele, but I wish they’d helped these women out a little. I always support using the auto tune if that’s an option you need. I use the bumpers when I bowl sometimes! Also why was Margaret Qualley there? She’s stunning and a great actress but she doesn’t have the mysterious sex appeal of a bond girl and it felt like an odd choice. Plus the didn’t even reveal the new James Bond???
Also, I wasn’t happy Michelle Trachtenberg was left out of the “In Memoriam” sequence.
The Speeches
I appreciated that Sean Baker and Mikey Madison thanked the sex worker community in their acceptance speeches, but it really magnified that nobody from Emilia Pérez thanked the trans community.
The only couple I’d enter a throuple with, Jazz Charton and Kieran Culkin, were adorable and perfect, of course. I will say, it does make me a liiiittle uncomfortable that Kieran acts like all he has to do is just bob his head like I Dream of Jeannie and Jazz will pop out a baby. Fertility can be complicated and Idk their situation but it’s less cute to me that he makes these huge public requests for children. But alas, I love them and would volunteer to be the surrogate for that fourth baby if they asked. Kieran’s brother Macaulay was at the Vanity Fair party and I wished I could’ve seen a reunion but I have to accept that they’re not close and that’s their business.
The Emilia Pérez song acceptance was sooooo cringe. Like me when I was 22 and they were trying to close the karaoke bar but I refused to give back the mic so my bestie and I could sing “Goodbye, Earl” one more time.
And of course, Adrien Brody. Cringiest of cringe. I posted on my story it was like when I’m trying to tell a serious story on edibles. I appreciate he wanted to highlight issues of anti-semitism, but the message got lost an hee came off rude, egomaniacal, entitled. I saw Halle Berry surprise kiss him on the red carpet, like he did to her when he won his first Oscar, making light of a situation that was also horribly cringe the last time he won!
I also hate hate hate that Karla Sofia Gascón robbed the Best Actor and Best Actresses from getting praise for their individual performances. They all deserved that small moment of recognition and her racist ass deprived them of it.
The Films
Sing Sing was robbed!!! Best film of the year and Colman deserved his flowers for that. I didn’t see The Brutalist (I’m sorry I just can’t make myself be bummed for three hours!), Conclave, The Substance (can’t do body horror), A Complete Unknown (but I want to!), Nickel Boys (but I’ve seen that one shot from above about 150 times now), I’m Still Here (did anyone see that? Is it good?). I enjoyed Dune: Part Two (where were Zendaya and Florence Pugh!?), I loved Wicked but knew it wouldn’t win, wrote about my feelings about Emilia Pérez, and that left Anora, which was expected to sweep. I liked Anora, didnt’ love it, but I like that an indie movie got some praise.
With Anora winning everything, including Best Actress, I felt so bad for J.Lo because remember when she really thought Hustlers was gonna win her an Oscar? Anora is very Hustlers-coded if you cut out most of the plot and substituted it with accents and vibes. I did see someone say that movies about sex workers only get praise when white men tell stories about white women and I don’t necessarily agree with that, but I see the point.
The nominees were weird to me in general. Like Anora won best picture but Challengers wasn’t even nominated at all?! Makes no sense to me, but happy to see Mikey Madison and indie film winning!
That's it for this week, today's consolation prize is free plumbing service. Hey, nobody wants to see a plumber's crack when the kids are watching.
