"Any job that involves a lot of reading and writing … I just don't want to be a doctor."
That's what Mattea Roach wrote when asked what their dream job would be in elementary school — and it's not that far off from what they're up to now.
The Jeopardy! superchamp and Canada Reads 2023 winner will be hosting CBC's newest show, Bookends with Mattea Roach, starting on Sept. 8, 2024.
Guided by Roach's thoughtful curiosity and broad knowledge, Bookends will dive deep into each writer's work and situate it in the broader context of history and the current world. Roach isn't afraid to ask the tough questions and promises that listeners will walk away with food for thought and exciting new books to read.
Bookends will feature conversations with some of the big-name authors and rising stars from Canada and around the world. Authors featured in the first season will include Heather O'Neill, Kaveh Akbar, Sloane Crosley, Casey McQuiston, Morgan Talty, Alison McCreesh, Corinna Chong, Teresa Wong, V. V. Ganeshananthan, Alan Hollinghurst and David Huebert.
"I'm excited to have the opportunity to do more interviews than I've been doing, to talk to more authors, to read more and to hopefully learn a lot on the job," Roach told CBC Books.
The show's title, Bookends with Mattea Roach, was chosen both for its simplicity and its dual meaning, said Roach. Just as physical bookends are "something that's on the outside of the actual pieces of work," the conversations on the show will also cover more than what's on the page.
"We're not just going to be summarizing the plot [...] or giving you stuff that you can read in the book and find out for yourself. We're of course going to touch on that, but we're hoping that it's going to be a bit more expansive, go beyond the text."

Jüri Pihel, CEO of Duo Media Networks, has confirmed that the popular Estonian quiz show 15 Questions, originally aired on Kanal 2, will soon be adapted in Latvia.
15 Questions gained international recognition as a finalist in the PITCH & PLAY LIVE! format competition, organized by CEETV and NATPE Budapest last year. This year, it was highlighted as one of the CEE Breakout Hits of the 2023/24 season by CEETV, thanks to its remarkable success in Estonia.
Pihel expressed his excitement about the show's international expansion, stating, "The format is very important to us, and we're thrilled that it will be launching in Latvia this September. This is our first international sale of the format, and we are currently in discussions with five other countries, which is fantastic news!"
CEETV has disclosed that Latvian commercial broadcaster 360TV has acquired the rights to the show, which will debut under the local title "15 Jautājumi" on September 2. The show will air daily at 7:30 PM, with an initial order of 60 episodes already in production. Each weekday, two contestants will compete for a prize of 150 euros, with Magnus Eriņš set to host.
Eriņš shared his enthusiasm, saying, "I anticipate a range of emotions and valuable lessons from hosting the show, as it will offer insights into how people think and react. I'm inspired by the perseverance and quick thinking of the contestants. This challenge is not only exciting but also an opportunity for me to prove myself, inspire others, and become part of something I've dreamed of for years."
15 Questions is a strategic memory quiz that allows players to leverage their strengths and exploit their opponents' weaknesses. What sets this game apart is the innovative clue system, ensuring that contestants never face a question without knowing the answer.
The BBC has announced that reality TV show The Traitors is returning, with a celebrity series.
The nine-parter was announced at the Edinburgh TV Festival, but it is not known when it will be made or broadcast, or who will be taking part. T
here will also be a fourth series featuring members of the public, and a third has already been filmed in the Scottish Highlands.
The murder-mystery gameshow sees several contestants chosen to become traitors capable of killing off rivals in a bid to secure a large cash prize. This will be the UK's first celebrity version of the show.
There have been two series of the program in the US - one featuring both celebrities and members of the public and a second which just had celebrities. That series included the likes of former House of Commons Speaker John Bercow and Love Island star Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu. Both the American series were filmed at the same location used for the UK show.
The Traitors in the UK became a hit on its debut in 2022, and the series two finale, which aired in January 2024, was viewed by nearly seven million people. The series has also won several prizes, including a TV Bafta, a National Television Award and an Royal Television Society award.
Kalpna Patel-Knight, the BBC's head of entertainment, said: "The Traitors has well and truly established itself as an unmissable highlight of the year and the news of a fourth outing, alongside a brand new celebrity version coming to the BBC, will take the series to a whole new level.
"It will once again be fascinating for our audiences to see who'll outwit, outplay, and outlast. Let the mind games begin!"
Prime Video will launch a UK version of the international hit format, Last One Laughing, which will be hosted by the award-winning comedian, television presenter and writer, Jimmy Carr. The series will be available exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide in 2025.
Famous for his dark humor, one liners and THAT laugh, Jimmy Carr challenges 10 of Britain's funniest comics to spend the day together without so much as cracking a smile. Over the course of the series, they will use every ounce of their comedic talents to try and break their opponents without cracking up themselves. And it's not just their rivals they need to watch out for. The show is packed with comedy cameos, format twists and surprises designed to lure a smile from the players and belly laughs from viewers. The rules are simple: laugh and you're out. It's a stellar line up of British comedy talent as you've never seen them before, but who will be crowned the inaugural winner of Last One Laughing UK?
Last One Laughing UK is the latest adaptation of the successful Amazon Original series from Japan entitled Documental, created by and starring Hitoshi Matsumoto and owned by Yoshimoto Kogyo, where Matsumoto leads 10 comedians betting their own money in an anything goes "battle of laughter behind closed doors." The fan-favourite Last One Laughing format became the most watched title of all time on Prime Video in France, Germany and Italy, and had hugely successful local versions in over 20 territories. Local celebrity hosts include Graham Norton (Ireland), Jay Baruchel (Canada), Eugenio Derbez (Mexico), Fedez (Italy), Michael "Bully" Herbig (Germany), Rebel Wilson (Australia) and Trevor Noah (South Africa).
"I'm thrilled to be making Last One Laughing UK with Prime Video. It's sure to deliver and if it doesn't, it will leave the fun with your neighbours. Usually when I make a TV show with 10 brilliant comics, I'm expecting everyone to have a bloody good laugh - but not in this series. The last one laughing wins. It's a great format and it's been a huge hit around the world. I can't wait to see who cracks up first."
"We're incredibly excited to bring the UK version of Last One Laughing to Prime Video" said Tara Erer, Head of UK and Northern Europe Originals for Amazon MGM Studios. "This show has been a huge success globally, and we can't wait to see how our talented UK comedians put their own spin on it. The UK has always produced world class comedy and having Jimmy Carr on board as the host is a fantastic addition. His sharp wit and comedic brilliance are the perfect fit for overseeing the hilarity that is sure to ensue."
Last One Laughing UK is produced by Banijay UK labels Initial and Zeppotron.
