Nigel Lythgoe is exiting So You Think You Can Dance after several sexual assault complaints.
Lythgoe, the co-creator, lead judge, and exec producer of So You Think You Can Dance, is the subject of two sexual misconduct lawsuits, including one filed by Paula Abdul who accused him of assaulting her twice over the past 20 years.
"I have informed the producers of So You Think You Can Dance of my decision to step back from participating in this year's series," Lythgoe said. "I did so with a heavy heart but entirely voluntarily because this great program has always been about dance and dancers, and that's where its focus needs to remain. In the meantime, I am dedicating myself to clearing my name and restoring my reputation."
The move also comes a few days after it emerged that Lythgoe is the subject of an investigation by Sony Pictures Television's 19 Entertainment, which co-produces SYTYCD with Dick Clark Productions.
19 Entertainment, Dick Clark Productions, and Fox confirmed the upcoming season of So You Think You Can Dance will proceed, "although without Nigel Lythgoe to ensure the show remains committed to the contestants, who have worked incredibly hard for the opportunity to compete on our stage. No decision has been made as to a replacement judge for this season, which will premiere on Fox on Monday, March 4," per those three companies.
As SYTYCD producer, 19 Entertainment is listed as a defendant in Abdul's suit, which alleges a 2015 incident during Season 12 of the dance competition at Lythgoe's Los Angeles home. He has denied the accusations, calling them "untrue."
On December 29, Abdul filed a sexual assault and gender violence lawsuit against Lythgoe, an exec producer on American Idol, over multiple alleged attacks.
The first alleged assault occurred "during one of American Idol's initial seasons" in a hotel elevator while the show was on the road. "Lythgoe shoved Abdul against the wall, then grabbed her genitals and breasts, and began shoving his tongue down her throat," the complaint stated.
The second assault supposedly happened over a decade later in 2015 during Season 12 of SYTYCD at Lythgoe's L.A. home. "Toward the end of the evening, Lythgoe forced himself on top of Abdul while she was seated on his couch and attempted to kiss her while proclaiming that the two would make an excellent 'power couple,'" the filing said.
The second lawsuit against Lythgoe is related to alleged sexual assault and harassment during the production of the short-lived ABC reality series All American Girl.
The incident in the second complaint comes from two All American Girl contestants. It allegedly took place after the show's finale party, when Lythgoe drove the two to an L.A. home instead of a promised studio to meet up with others.

Let's all go to art school.
The new late-night show "After Midnight," hosted by Taylor Tomlinson, will premiere on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 12:37 a.m. ET on CBS, the network announced on Thursday.
"With celebrated comedian Taylor Tomlinson at the helm and a panel of guests from the worlds of entertainment, comedy, music, and beyond, After Midnight is a late-night comedy series about what set the internet abuzz that day with a game show feel," CBS said in a news release, calling it "the smartest show on television about the dumbest things on the internet."
The late-night series, a new incarnation of Comedy Central's "@midnight," will fill the timeslot that previously featured "The Late Late Show" with James Corden.
Corden taped his last episode in April after eight years and nearly 1,200 episodes as host.
Stephen Colbert, host of "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert," announced Tomlinson, an up-and-coming comedian, as the host back in November. Colbert also serves as an executive producer for the new show.

Back with a bang, The Traitors returned for the BBC last night, watched by 3M viewers.
The opening ep, in which 22 contestants were introduced and three were chosen to be 'traitors', has been anticipated for months, following the runaway, watercooler success of the first.
Helmed ably once again by Claudia Winkleman, the show peaked with around 3.1M, according to Barb ratings data supplied by overnights.tv, as contestants including a clairvoyant, chess coach and a British Army engineer entered the fray in the now-beloved Scottish castle.
Episodes will air three a week at 9 p.m. GMT (1 p.m. GMT) with three dropped on iPlayer at a time, and a second season of Peacock's U.S. version, hosted by Alan Cumming, will kick off shortly.
While 3M is miles behind entertainment juggernauts such as I'm a Celebrity and Strictly Come Dancing, it is a decent showing for a highly-formatted reality show that has only been airing for two seasons, and the numbers will likely shoot up on iPlayer.
On the flipside, BBC bosses may have expected to outdo last year's opening ep, which hit 2.9M, given that the pubcaster has thrown its marketing might behind the series. Last year's first ep was helped by a healthy lead-in from an England World Cup football match.
In a rare feat for a multi-episode entertainment show, the series grew audience through the run, both on iPlayer and on linear. The final was watched by 3.3M in what was an incredibly dramatic conclusion.
The BBC's Survivor reboot opened with 2.5M in October 2023, roughly level with ITV's relaunched Big Brother.
The Traitors couldn't come close to matching the most-watched show on British TV yesterday, which was the 6pm news.

Argentinean broadcaster Canal 13 has ordered the first Latin American version of Dutch quiz show format The Floor following a deal with Talpa, which has also sold it into Hungary.
Set to air later this year, the format is being adapted by Buenos Aires-based prodco Kuarzo Entertainment. The Hungarian adaptation, meanwhile, marks the tenth for the show and will air on RTL Hungary later this year, with Scripted Productions on board to produce.
The format was picked up by Rai in Italy, Fox in the US, Dogan Media-owned Romanian network Kanal D, France Télévisions, Sat.1 in Germany, Spain's Atresmedia and Novyi Kanal in Ukraine in 2023.
The Floor sees 100 contestants face off in quiz duels on a giant LED floor divided into 100 squares, each representing its own field of knowledge. The goal is to conquer the floor and take home a cash prize. RTL4 in the Netherlands began airing the original last year and the Dutch version is heading into its second season.
Pablo Codevilla, programming manager at Canal 13, said: "This captivating and challenging gameshow, known for its fast-paced nature and thrilling high-stakes duels, promises an engaging experience for our audience."
Peter Kolosi, chief content officer at RTL Hungary, said: "Embracing innovation and entertainment, we eagerly anticipate bringing a new dimension of excitement to viewers of RTL Hungary."

Before Taylor Swift gets on our nerves, here's this.
BLANK SLATE will premiere Monday, January 8 on Game Show Network and air weekdays.
Based on the board game by USAopoly and in the comedic game show format, BLANK SLATE is a fun and funny game show where thinking alike, in the form of matching answers to clever fill-in-the blank questions, can win you big bucks. Each team of two friends will be paired with a comedian guest, and the teams accumulate points by matching their teammates, with a bonus if any player matches America's top answer. The celebrities switch teams in round two, and in round three the trailing team picks the comedian partner they believe will help them win. The winning team moves on to the bonus round where they can pick a comedian to match on each question. If the team gets three matches, they walk away with $10,000!
BLANK SLATE is a Game Show Enterprises Studios production with Rane Laymance serving as executive producer. Richard Gerrits and Laura Robinson also serve as Executive Producers for Heath Street Media Inc.
