The Talking Through The Medias opening toss up story.
The BBC has pulled a University Challenge Christmas special episode from its festive schedule following complaints by two disabled contestants.
According to BBC News, one blind and one neurodivergent contestant took part in the episode – which features teams of distinguished alumni who compete on behalf of their former universities – but it won't air following grievances over a lack of audio description and subtitles. The contestants have not been named.
One of the contestants was quoted by BBC News saying the experience was "distressing" and the other "overwhelming and overstimulating." The first said they were told one minute before the show that there would be no audio description and "your captain will instead have to explain everything," according to the BBC News article, while the second claimed a request for subtitles made in advance was turned down.
The decision was made today to pull the episode of the iconic BBC quiz, which is hosted by Amol Rajan. The rest of the spin-off series will go ahead as planned.
A BBC spokesperson said: "We can confirm that an episode in the upcoming series of Alumni University Challenge will not be broadcast because two of the contestants felt their access requirements were not sufficiently met by the production.
"We are working closely with producers to improve cross industry access on our programmes to ensure a consistent approach is implemented. We would like to apologise to the individuals and teams concerned, and they have been written to personally by the producers."
ITV Studios-backed Lifted Entertainment, which produces University Challenge, confirmed that the contestants "requested that certain adjustments be made in order for them to be able to fully participate" during the pre-filming briefing.
"However, following the recording, we were made aware that the adjustments made fell short of their requirements. We have spoken to the individuals involved and offered our sincere apologies," added Lifted. "Having listened very carefully to their descriptions of their experiences, we agreed with the BBC that the fairest course of action was not to screen this particular edition."
Both the BBC and Lifted Entertainment released statements of apology. A BBC spokesman said: "We are working closely with producers to improve cross-industry access on our programmes to ensure a consistent approach is implemented. We would like to apologise to the individuals and teams concerned, and they have been written to personally by the producers."
In a statement, the National Federation of the Blind of the UK called for the whole series to be scrapped and re-recorded:
"Given that the two contestants were expecting to compete as equals thinking that their access requirements were being met, it must have been a traumatic experience to go through during the filming. "It is essential that the whole series is withdrawn and started again. Who wants to win when you know that your opponents have been discriminated and treated unfairly in this way."

Last week, we showed you midseason lineups of CBS, NBC and Fox, but what about ABC? Well......
ABC is taking up temporary residence at The Arconia.
The network will air the first season of Hulu's critically adored comedy Only Murders in the Building in January. The season will run in two-hour blocks on Tuesday nights over three weeks starting Jan. 2, with a one-hour slot for the season finale on Jan. 23.
ABC will also move Celebrity Jeopardy! to Tuesday nights for its final episodes of the season, starting with a semifinal on Jan. 2. The game show will air at 8 p.m., followed by Only Murders at 9 p.m. The two-hour blocks on Jan. 2, 9 and 16 will contain three episodes each.
The moves will help ABC fill its schedule ahead of the return of its homegrown scripted series in February. Will Trent, The Rookie and The Good Doctor are set to occupy Tuesdays starting Feb. 20, but the network hadn't previously announced any programming for the first few weeks of 2024. (What will air in the three weeks after Celebrity Jeopardy! and Only Murders finish is still to be determined.)
ABC has set return dates for its scripted series, joining CBS in laying out a post-strikes lineup that will see the likes of Abbott Elementary, Grey's Anatomy and new addition 911 join the schedule in early 2024.
The broadcast network will also have a handful of unscripted staples — American Idol, The Bachelor and Judge Steve Harvey — and a 20/20-branded true-crime series from ABC News to round out its midseason slate.
With most shows not starting production until after Thanksgiving, the episode counts for scripted series will be smaller than in a typical year — 10 to 13 episodes, as opposed to between 16 and 22.
ABC's Wednesday comedy block of The Conners, Not Dead Yet and Abbott Elementary will be the first scripted shows to return to the network's air; with all three, along with Judge Steve Harvey, are set to premiere Feb. 7, with Abbott getting an hourlong debut.
ABC has only three half-hour comedies on its roster at the moment and will announce later how it plans to fill the 9:30 p.m. Wednesday spot. The network will stack dramas on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
Second-year show Will Trent will lead off Tuesdays starting Feb. 20, followed by The Rookie and The Good Doctor. The Thursday lineup will debut March 14, with 911 — which is moving from Fox — leading into Grey's Anatomy and Station 19.
The Bachelor will return to its usual Monday spot Jan. 22, with the true-crime series following at 10 p.m. American Idol opens its season Feb. 18, paired with ABC News' What Would You Do? on Sunday nights. Fridays remain the same with Shark Tank and 20/20.

Hit UK comedy game show Taskmaster is getting a VR spin-off game for Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3, and it's set to launch in 2024.
Published by Scallywag Arcade, a Draw & Code studio, and made in partnership with Avalon (the production company behind the TV series), Taskmaster VR gives players the chance to test themselves against the show's many challenges through their virtual reality headset.
Stepping into the shoes of a contestant, players will experience the creativity of the show alongside Meta's virtual reality technology and be let loose in the Taskmaster House with the goal to claim the golden head trophy and call themselves Taskmaster Champion. You can take a look at the trailer below.
"The world of Taskmaster is perfect for VR" said Niall Taylor, head of games at Scallywag Arcade, teasing an "immersive" experience which combines "the hilarity of the show with the freedom of virtual reality."
The Taskmaster himself, Greg Davies, said: "The team have done an incredible job and the game is a really exciting addition to the Taskmaster world. On a personal note, the creation of a virtual reality Taskmaster takes me ever closer to my ultimate goal of working without even leaving my sofa."
Scallywag says that Taskmaster VR will offer fans and gamers alike an "immersive opportunity" to engage with the show's features and its stars in a new way, with Davies and Alex Horne, the show's creator and the Taskmaster's assistant, along for the fully voice acted experience.
"Genuinely, this is extraordinary, brilliant and very fun," said Horne. "Also, I've always wanted to be a contestant on Taskmaster so this is great for me as a VR user, except that I will also have my virtual self watching my attempts and undermining my confidence so I may well regret the whole venture after I've had a go."

Facing augmented reality, it's a Mistplay game break. Name the Hallmark christmas movie from this synopsis.
A TV movie about two news broadcasters who compete for a morning talk show job and fall in love.
Think that helps? Figure it out after Deb Hedley performs a TSO classic in the Spotify Soundstage.
Sweet. What's the answer, you might say?
Superman and Clarissa together. never had the 90s brought together something cool.

Next week, Rod Kim will perform a christmas classic for us. But in the meantime, he has this.
