Strike Watch.

In their first meeting since the strike began, Writers Guild of America and Hollywood studio negotiators hit the same stalemate over two key TV-related contract proposals from the guild as its work stoppage stretches into its fourth month.

A much anticipated meeting between WGA chief negotiator Ellen Stutzman and WGA West general counsel Tony Segall ran about an hour on Friday afternoon at the Sherman Oaks headquarters of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Sources said the WGA duo made clear that the guild will not bend on proposals to establish minimum staffing levels in episodic TV and a guaranteed minimum number of weeks of employment. The AMPTP has called those proposals non-starters, and gave no indication on Friday that they're prepared to change that position.

The SAG-AFTRA strike, which began on July 14, has added another complicating factor in negotiations with the writers.

Sources said Stutzman and Segall indicated that even if the WGA gets a deal, writers will still want to honor all picket lines. That would essentially mean that no one could return to work until both strikes are resolved. That irked some on the management side, who saw that as adding an additional demand on top of the issues already on the table. Representatives for the AMPTP and WGA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

On Friday night, the WGA sent a message to members responding to "studio-leaked rumors of the contents of the confidential meeting."

The guild provided its own summary of the meeting, in which it confirmed that the studios remain "unwilling to engage" on the issues related to TV writers' rooms. Additionally, the AMPTP is unwilling to discuss a viewership-based residual, which is another key concern for writers, among other issues.

"On behalf of the Guild, Ellen reiterated the expectation that all the fundamental issues over which writers have been striking these past three months would be addressed in this new contract, and that no segment of the membership would be left behind," the guild stated.

The union also confirmed that it is seeking the right to honor other unions' picket lines, which is a term currently provided in the Teamsters' contract. In the meeting, Stutzman also raised issues arising from the strike, including an extension of health benefits and additional funding for the health plan.

According to the union, Carol Lombardini, the CEO of the AMPTP, said three times during the meeting: "People just want to get back to work."

"We agree, with the caveat that those conditions that have made writers' jobs increasingly untenable must first be addressed," the union stated.

More developments...
- British acting union Equity will "stand in unwavering solidarity" with its counterpart SAG-AFTRA over the looming actors strike. A statement issued jointly with SAG-AFTRA in the past few minutes on the Equity website said: "Equity UK will support SAG-AFTRA and its members by all lawful means." Because of the UK's existing anti-trade union laws, "SAG-AFTRA members currently working under an Equity UK collective bargaining agreement should continue to report to work," the statement read.
- The Teamsters Union has been supporting the Writers Guild of America (WGA) for the last 75 days across Hollywood and the scribes have returned the favor. Deadline reports that a group of WGA members, around 50 writers, joined a picket line at an Amazon warehouse in Santa Clarita, California, to support the Amazon drivers and dispatchers in their own dispute.
- Ted Sarandos wants striking writers and actors to know he is a union man through and through, and he feels their pain – even as Netflix and other studios and streamers have no plans to restart talks with either the WGA or SAG-AFTRA anytime soon. "I was raised in a union household," the Netflix co-CEO declared at the top of the streamer's latest earnings call this afternoon. "My dad was a member of IBEW Local 640, he was a union electrician," the Phoenix, Arizona-born Sarandos said. "And I remember his local because that union was very much a part of our lives when I was growing up. And I also remember on more than one occasion, my Dad being out on strike. And I remember that because it takes an enormous toll on your family, financially and emotionally."
- The Working Families Party is the latest organization to show support to striking writers and actors with a message for the studios. The political party has taken its blaring message to the AMPTP's headquarters in Sherman Oaks this morning with a message of solidarity for the WGA and SAG-AFTRA.
- Bethenny Frankel is calling on her fellow reality TV stars to stop working until they negotiate a new deal. Amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the Real Housewives of New York City alum is arguing that unscripted TV personalities should be paid residuals when repeats of their shows air on cable and stream online. "Why isn't reality TV on strike?" she asks on Instagram. "I got paid $7,250 for my first season of reality TV, and people are still watching those episodes. "During the last writers' strike, we were providing all of the entertainment, and that's when the gold rush of reality TV started," she says. "I, myself, have generated millions and millions of dollars in advertising and online impressions being on reality TV, and I have never made a single residual. So, either I'm missing something, or we're being screwed, too."
- Dwayne Johnson contributes a "historic" seven-figure donation to SAG-AFTRA Foundation Relief Fund. Executive director Cyd Wilson said, "It's the largest single donation that we've ever received from one individual at one time. And what is amazing is that that one check is going to help thousands of actors keep food on their table, and keep their kids safe, and keep their cars running. And it's not lost on me that he's very humble about this, but it is a way to get us started."
- Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA's national executive director and chief negotiator, blasted the AMPTP at a strike rally Tuesday in Times Square, saying that the companies' response to the guild's proposals before contract talks broke off and the actors' strike began 12 days ago was "No. No. No." Speaking before hundreds of cheering actors and their supporters from other guilds and unions, Crabtree-Ireland noted that when he and SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher had talked to the CEOs of three of the studios on that last day of bargaining May 12, "We said: 'Here's all you have to do to make sure there's no strike. All you have to do is make this fair deal.'
- WGA West president Meredith Stiehm echoes the sentiment, telling her members today that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers's only option to end the ongoing Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes is "to make a fair deal for writers and actors – one that shares the wealth with the people who create it." She vowed, however, that once the strike is over, the guild and the studios will return to being "partners" once again.
- A majority of some 5,000 freelance TV commercial production workers, organizing under the banner of the grassroots "Stand With Production" movement, have signed authorization cards certifying that they wish to unionize with IATSE. According to IATSE, the Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP) has agreed to voluntarily recognize them as a group for the purposes of collective bargaining.
- As a heat dome that has roasted North America continues to move east, SAG-AFTRA announced on Twitter that it is cancelling picket lines in New York City for the next two days out of safety concerns. The Writers Guild of America East has also made similar cancellations for Friday's picket lines and has moved a Thursday picket line for comedy writers to morning hours before temperatures peak. Temperatures in Manhattan are expected to exceed 95 degrees on Thursday and Friday with a chance of rain. An excessive heat warning has been issued by the National Weather Service.
- The NHL Players Association and the MLB Players Associationstand in solidarity. "All they care about is power. They don't care about the strength of your arguments. They don't care what's fair or what's right," MLBPA deputy executive director Bruce Meyer said during his speech to WGA members. "The power you have is what you're doing right now. The power you have is the ability to withhold your services. That's what it's all about. It's not easy. It's not fun. But what you're doing here is what gives you power."
- Seth MacFarlane has donated $1 million to the Entertainment Community Fund to assist industry workers impacted by the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, the organization said Tuesday. Since May 1 — the day before the Writers Guild went on strike — the fund has raised more than $6.3 million from more than 7,500 donors including MacFarlane in support of film and television workers.
- IATSE has allocated another $2 million to support its members who have been negatively affected by the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild strikes, bringing the total committed to $4 million since June. The additional funding was approved unanimously by IATSE's general executive board.

Eden Gaha is exiting his role as president at LA- and Sydney-based unscripted firm Eureka Productions after just over a year.

The veteran executive and showrunner, who officially joined in June 2022 to help accelerate growth in the US, said he is leaving the Fremantle-backed outfit to return to original production, creating shows and showrunning.

"We are hugely grateful to Eden for all he has done in his role as president," said co-CEO Chris Culvenor. "I'm incredibly proud of what we've achieved together since I joined the Eureka team, including the launch of seven original series, many of which are returning. Mission accomplished," said Gaha.

"This was not my first time working with Chris and Paul and I know it won't be the last, but it's so long for now as I return to my roots as an independent producer, creator and showrunner."
