Saturday night TV in the UK was THE destination to any couch potato at home. You had The Generation Game, Blind Date, Gladiators, Casuality, Baywatch, among others. This one was part of it's last years of LWT which defined what weekends on ITV was about.
ITV primetime hosts Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly – better known by their joint moniker Ant and Dec – have said they plan to "take a break" from their long-running variety show "Saturday Night Takeaway."
The duo have hosted 19 seasons of the show, which features entertainment and quiz segments, since it launched in 2002. It is produced by ITV Studios-owned Lifted Entertainment and Mitre Studios.
This doesn't spell the end for "Saturday Night Takeaway" however. In 2009 the two hosts also took a break from the show before returning four years later.
Broadcaster ITV – which recently extended its deal with the duo for a reported £30 million ($37 million) for three years – reassured viewers Ant and Dec would continue to front other primetime shows including "I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!," "Britain's Got Talent" and "Limitless Win."
"We love making 'Saturday Night Takeaway,' but reaching the milestone of 20 seasons seemed like the perfect time to pause for a little while and catch our breath," said McPartlin. Donnelly added: "We still have a momentous 20th season to look forward to first so we will do our best to go out (for now) with a bang in 2024!"
ITV managing director for media and entertainment Kevin Lygo said: "When you think of Saturday night television you think of 'Saturday Night Takeaway.' Over 20 seasons the show has become a cultural phenomenon, and while we eagerly anticipate what Ant and Dec have up their sleeves for the 2024 series, we completely understand their desire to take a pause, take stock, and think about what the next incarnation of the show might look like."

The Yay: Jeopardy! Masters. Former J! champions showed wannabe masters a lesson in how well you play the game and how you respond to it.
The yawn: Would I Lie to You? USA edition. It was trying real hard to join Whose Line as one of the 2 to come from the UK to join the CW fray but a snoozefest took the show out leaving the BBC version unopposed.

For the second straight year, Fox is not releasing a fall schedule at its upfront presentation. Whenever the network does announce its plans, it will include a healthy dose of unscripted programming.
The broadcaster did release its slate of primetime series for the 2023-24 season Monday morning, and it features near parity between the number of scripted (13) and unscripted (12) shows. The latter category includes renewals for Farmer Wants a Wife and Special Forces; new game shows Snake Oil, hosted by David Spade, and We Are Family, hosted by Jamie and Corinne Foxx and from the same producers as Beat Shazam; and the returns of I Can See Your Voice, which took the 2022-23 season off, and Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, last seen on Fox way back in 2014 — when it shared space on the schedule with the first seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Sleepy Hollow.
The news of We Are Family comes a few days after Corinne Foxx announced on social media that dad Jamie Foxx had been released from the hospital and was recuperating following a health scare last month.
Animated series Krapopolis and Grimsburg will also join the network in 2023-24 after giving series orders to both in 2021. The two shows have already been picked up for additional seasons.
"Across every genre of FOX's 2023-24 lineup, we continue to attract the brightest, most prolific creators in the industry," Fox Entertainment CEO Rob Wade said in a statement. "As a result, our content portfolio continues to deliver balance and variety in its storytelling through the strength and stability of our returning favorites and tremendous creativity of our new series."
With the Writers Guild of America strike putting production on potential fall scripted shows very much in limbo, the lack of a schedule announcement from Fox makes some sense. CBS largely ignored the strike in announcing its fall plans, while NBC's schedule is at least partly strike-proof as some of its scripted shows filmed before the strike began.
"Rather than announce a schedule today that we may not be able to meet, we're holding back until we see what's going to be available when," Dan Harrison, Fox's executive vp program planning and content strategy, told reporters Monday. "We will have original entertainment scheduled in a coherent way in the fall."
Harrison also noted that due to the way animation production works, Fox will have original episodes of its Sunday animated block ready for the fall.
The network doesn't have any live-action scripted shows in the can, but Fox did give an early renewal to The Cleaning Lady that allowed the show to get ahead on writing.
In addition to the new unscripted shows, Fox is also adding two dramas to its 2023-24 lineup: Doc is a medical show about a doctor recovering from a traumatic brain injury, and Rescue: Hi-Surf follows a group of heavy-water lifeguards in Hawaii.
We Are Family is a musical game show in which non-famous relatives of celebrities — athletes, actors and recording artists — perform musical duets with their famous family members (who are hidden from view). The studio audience will be made up of contestants trying to win money by guessing the identities of the hidden celebrities. Apploff Entertainment (Beat Shazam) and Fox Alternative Entertainment are producing, with Jeff Apploff, Jamie Foxx and showrunner Matilda Zoltowski executive producing.
Snake Oil will feature contestants hearing pitches for outlandish products from entrepreneurs — some of whom are genuine and others of whom are fake. The show comes from Fox Alternative Entertainment and Electric Avenue (Lego Masters), with Will Arnett, Marc Forman and showrunner Neal Konstantini exec producing. Spade is a producer.

Then there's ABC.
ABC on Tuesday became the third broadcast network (after CBS and NBC) to unveil its schedule for the Fall TV season — and it's a jaw-dropper.
In what can only be viewed as a foreboding sign about the potential duration of the current writers' strike, the network's fall schedule is comprised entirely of unscripted fare (save for a pair of Abbott Elementary reruns on Wednesday).
Included in the reality-drenched lineup is the debut of the long-gestating Golden Bachelor, an AARP-focused spinoff of the dating franchise.
ABC declined to comment on its new strike-proof schedule, but an Alphabet insider says the network is "prepared" for the possibility of a prolonged work stoppage. The plan, as it stand now, is for most, if not all, of ABC's scripted offerings to launch at midseason. As a result, the network will "likely" be reducing episode orders on certain shows (translation: don't expect traditional 22-episode seasons of faves Grey's Anatomy, Station 19 and The Rookie).

There's even Netflix too.
Greg Peters, co-CEO, kicked off Netflix's first Upfront today by explaining to advertisers that:
"We share a common goal, which is building connection. You want to connect consumers with your amazing brands. And we want to connect them with amazing entertainment they'll love";
"For our members, it all starts with the variety and quality of our TV shows and films. So whatever your taste, whatever mood you're in, whoever you're with - we'll have something great for you to watch. From Emmy-winning dramas to reality TV, stand-up comedy to true crime, Oscar winners to action-adventure, rom-com to horror, we have it all"; and
"It's why, despite all the competition out there, Netflix is the most popular streaming service today. To be the one to watch, you need everyone watching. And that's what sets Netflix apart".
During its Upfront, Netflix highlighted new upcoming shows including Shawn Levy's All the Light We Cannot See, Griselda with Sofía Vergara and the latest epic from David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, 3 Body Problem, along with returning favorites like Bridgerton, Stranger Things, Formula 1: Drive to Survive, Outer Banks, and Cobra Kai. "Netflix has more returning series than any other streamer," Bajaria added.
Netflix also announced the return of some of TV's most popular shows with season renewals of Ginny & Georgia (S3 and S4) and Virgin River (S6), which come after recent renewals for The Night Agent (S2) and The Diplomat (S2). On the reality side, Love is Blind (S5) will be back in September, and Squid Game: The Challenge will debut in November.
Netflix also announced the return of "Is it Cake?" and the addition of its latest "Nailed It!" spinoff, "The Big Nailed It Baking Challenge," with both to premiere on the platform this summer.
"Is It Cake, Too?" will premiere on June 30. It will keep deceiving celebrity judges as some of the world's most talented bakers compete to create hyper-realistic cakes that look exactly like everyday objects. As they compete with cash on the line, judges and audiences will ask, "Is it real?" or… "Is it cake?"
The eight-episode game show is hosted by Mikey Day and executive produced by Dan Cutforth, Jane Lipsitz, Nan Strait, Dan Volpe, Andrew Wallace and Cat Sullivan.
"The Big Nailed It Baking Challenge" has yet to announce its premiere date, but it is set to drop this summer. The latest "Nailed It" installment gives a group of inexperienced, yet motivated bakers the opportunity of a lifetime. Host Nicole Byer and judge Jacques Torres provide the 10 bakers with every tool and resource they need to become professional bakers. With help and coaching from world-renowned pastry chefs, they will compete against one another. Whoever makes it to the finish line as the best baker will be awarded a cash prize.
The 10-episode game show joins the "Nailed It!" universe, executive produced by Casey Kriley, Jo Sharon, Gaylen Gawlowski, Claire Kosloff and Hillary Olsen.
Fall 2023 Series Slate Highlights:
- Love Is Blind: Season 5 - Netflix will premiere Season 5 of its Emmy-nominated dating show Love Is Blind in September. The news was announced Wednesday as part of Netflix's virtual upfront presentation.
New Unscripted Competitions
- Surviving Paradise - Social experiment and survival competition
- Squid Game: The Challenge - Netflix revealed that Squid Game: The Challenge will premiere on its service in November. It comes 17 months after the series was handed a greenlight by the streamer. 'Memba This?
Reality television hoax series The Joe Schmo Show is getting new life 20 years after it initially debuted, but it will be without the main face of its original version.
TBS is behind the new iteration, which will follow a guy named Ben who believes he's on a competition show called The Goat. Cat Deeley of So You Think You Can Dance hosts The Joe Schmo Show, as well as the fake show inside it. As with past versions of the show, the rest of the cast will be made up of actors and improv performers whose job is to push the show's absurdity levels while also keeping Ben believing in the illusion (see a trailer below).
TBS' announcement comes on the heels of Amazon Freevee airing Jury Duty, a similarly premised show that had actors (and one mark) staging a pretend court case.
"When The Joe Schmo Show launched 20 years ago, it was ahead of its time," said Jason Sarlanis, president Turner Networks, ID and HLN, linear and streaming. "In rebooting this classic for a modern, savvy audience, it gives us the opportunity to comment on the often absurd and hilarious tropes of reality television in ways our viewers will love."
The first Joe Schmo Show debuted in 2003 on Paramount Network forerunner Spike TV. It became a word-of-mouth hit, and its finale set what was then a ratings record for the cable channel. The second season in 2004 spoofed dating shows — and featured one of the two non-actors, Ingrid Wiese, figuring out the ruse and later joining in on it.
Joe Schmo then disappeared for nine years before returning in 2013, with the premise of finding a bounty hunter. Lorenzo Lamas, who starred in the 1990s bounty hunter series Renegade, played himself. Ralph Garman hosted all three seasons of the show, playing characters in the second and third editions.
Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool) created the series. The show had an eye for talent, casting Kristen Wiig, Natasha Leggero, David Hornsby (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Jon Huertas early in their careers.
Over the three initial seasons, the one constant presence was that of Ralph Garman, a comedian and actor (his credits include Ted and voice work on Family Guy) who currently leads the podcast The Ralph Report and co-hosts Hollywood Babble-On with Kevin Smith. Garman led the proceedings in all three seasons of Schmo, which included adopting a British accent to host the second one and then returning in the third season as a bounty hunter.

You might've seen it on social media but................
"This Morning" anchors Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield – the U.K.'s answer to Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest – have gone their separate ways in a shock split.
Schofield announced on Saturday he would be stepping down from the show. In his statement he implied the decision had not entirely been his. "I have always been proud to cover fascinating stories on 'This Morning,'" he said in a post on Instagram. "But recently, 'This Morning' itself has become the story. Throughout my career in TV – including the very difficult last few days – I have always done my best to be honourable and kind. I understand that ITV has decided the current situation can't go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love."
"So I have agreed to step down from 'This Morning' with immediate effect in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future. I'd like to thank everyone who has supported me – especially 'This Morning's' amazing viewers – and I'll see you all for the Soap Awards next month."
Colloquially known as "Holly and Phil," the duo, whose professional relationship stretches back almost two decades and encompasses multiple shows (as well as "This Morning" they also host "Dancing on Ice" together), will no longer work together on the ITV daytime juggernaut. It is unclear whether they will reunite for "Dancing on Ice," which traditionally broadcasts in the winter months.
In a statement also posted on Instagram, Willoughby wrote: "It's been over 13 great years presenting 'This Morning' with Phil and I want to take this opportunity to thank him for all of his knowledge, his experience and his humour. The sofa won't feel the same without him."
ITV have not yet commented on the split or confirmed who is set to replace Schofield on "This Morning.

10 years ago, you weren't ready for the biggest thing to happen on the peacock network............until now.
The Million Second Quiz pitted contestants to knock somebody and I mean somebody out of the money chair by answering multiple choice questions. Not only it's on NBC but it was also live streamed. 500 seconds was all it took to play head to head matches that resulted in players getting knocked out and the money chair growing.
Once the countdown clock reaches zero, the four contestants with the highest totals throughout the game keep all of their credited winnings and compete in a series of three elimination bouts; the fourth and third-place winners face off in a 400-second bout, the victor of the first bout faces the second-place winner (400 seconds), and the victor of the second bout faces the first-place winner (500 seconds). The victor of the final bout receives a further $2,000,000.[13]
In the season finale, Andrew Kravis defeated Brandon Saunders to win the grand prize, for an overall total of $2,326,346. Seacrest then announced that Kravis's winnings would be increased to $2,600,000 to make him the all-time highest-earning regular-season contestant on a single American game show, surpassing Ken Jennings's $2,522,700 run on Jeopardy! in 2004.
