Writers for the ABC game show The Chase are going on strike.
The strike was initiated at 9 a.m. ET "after the companies refused to agree to cover writers’ work under the Writers Guild of America’s Minimum Basic Agreement," according to a statement from The Writers Guilds of America, East and West. The guilds told their members Wednesday that "Working Rule 8" is in effect for the show, which is produced by ITV America for ABC.
Working Rule 8 states that "No member shall accept employment with, nor option or sell literary material to, any person, firm or corporation who is not signatory to the applicable MBAs."
The guilds and ITV have been in negotiations in recent weeks, with the union insisting that the MBA be applied to the show, as it is for other game shows like Jeopardy! and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? The MBA includes things like health and pension benefits, as well as residuals. The guilds say that ITV told them Monday that the MBA would not apply to the show.
"After the WGAE approached ITV one week ago, we began good faith negotiations and proposed a package for the writers that includes generous, over scale pay increases and health benefits through the WGA," said ITV America in a statement. "Despite that proposal, the WGAE is refusing to make a deal and insisting on terms that would economically cripple the show. We remain open to continuing discussions with the guild. ITV offers top-tier health benefits to all employees, whether union or non-union."

March seemed to be a perfect time to find out who got a boost of adrenaline and who ended up getting poked with a needle. Ouch. It's the Yay and Yawn of March.
The Yay: Paramount Plus. They're taking the classic Nickelodeon game shows to the channel in addition to Fraiser reruns.
The Yawn: Dr. Oz hosting Jeopardy! Doesn't this feel like Trace Adkins hosting Dance Fever?

will see you on the island for Survivor 41!” Jeff Probst, the host and an executive producer of the competition series, posted to Twitter.
With production having been delayed due to COVID, he explains that now “Fiji has invited us back to their beautiful country to shoot Season 41. We have all our COVID protocols in place so that everybody in Fiji will remain safe, all of our crew will be safe, and of course, our players will be safe.”
And he claims to be even more excited about this season than any other he’s done before.
“I can’t remember a time I’ve been this pumped to shoot Survivor,” he said. I am thrilled to tell you all that @survivorcbs is going back into production and I will see you on the island for #Survivor 41! @CBSpic.twitter.com/RtQGVFoDDL — Jeff Probst (@JeffProbst) March 22, 2021
And he explains that “the past year has reminded me — and I hope it’s reminded you — that you gotta live your life like it’s one, big, great adventure and Survivor fulfills that.” Production on Season 41 was originally supposed to begin on March 24, 2020, but was postponed to May as the coronavirus began to spread.
Survivor was initially part of CBS’ 2020-2021 schedule for the fall that was put out in May, but that changed in July and S.W.A.T.‘s return moved up from the midseason.
“Producers for Survivor … are continuing to work with officials in Fiji on the appropriate time to start production on its next edition, with health and safety matters the top priority for everyone involved,” the network said at the time.
Toymaker Mattel is bringing one of its best known brands — Barbie — to unscripted TV.
The company is teaming with Mission Control Media (Hollywood Game Night, Face Off) to develop a fashion design competition called Barbie Fashion Battle series that focuses on designing clothes for Barbie dolls. It's one of a host of projects Mattel Television is developing based on its large catalog of well-known toy and game brands.
"For more than 60 years, Barbie has been boss when it comes to fashion and has served as a muse for a variety of fashion designers, many of whom continue to design for her today," said Mattel TV executive producer Adam Bonnett. "Now, in partnership with Mission Control Media, Barbie Fashion Battle will give the next generation of designers the opportunity to design high-fashion looks for Barbie. This project is part of our broader effort to expand the Barbie content universe with new scripted and unscripted content, including the recently announced Barbie & Chelsea: The Lost Birthday, among other projects."
Barbie Fashion Battle will feature 12 adult designers, divided into two "fashion houses" headed by style icons. Competitors will create Barbie-sized high fashion collections that will be presented in "cinematic reveal sequences." The winner will get a cash prize and the chance to design a line of Barbie fashions that will be featured on the Mattel Creations platform. No TV or streaming outlet is attached yet.
"Barbie is one of the most recognized brands in the world so the opportunity to collaborate with Mattel on this fun and creative project has been incredible," said Mission Control Media co-founder Dwight D. Smith. "We can't wait to introduce viewers to this colorful world and see all of the stunning work these fashion designers create."
Bonnett, Smith and Mission Control's Michael Agbabian will executive produce the series.

n a year where linear struggled, Game Show Network was one of the 10 biggest networks notching growth in both total day and primetime in 2020. Going into 2021 upfront talks, the network—whose audience was up 13% year over year in 2020 in total day and total viewers—is touting that growth as its biggest strength.
“Over the past four years, as viewers contracted in linear, we’ve grown” said John Zaccario, Game Show Network’s evp of ad sales. “We spent a lot of time in the last three years preparing for this moment in scaling up the amount of programming we have available, and being able to offer viewers a consistent, stripped schedule.”
The network, which syndicates long-running game shows and programs on a strip schedule in which subsequent episodes air across all five weeknights, has counted four consecutive years of total viewer growth and ended 2020 with its most viewers since 2015. A large portion of the network’s audience are adults older than 55.
“For our audience, they’re spending on categories like fast food, home insurance, travel, casual dining,” said Zaccario. “At the end of the day, that’s what matters most. Whether or not the audience that are watching your commercials are executing a transaction, and ours execute a transaction.” For the last several years, Game Show Network has been building out its original programming lineup on the network, and early production in 2019 helped shield the network from some of the production headaches.
The network, which shifted to traditional game show formats in 2018, was of the few networks able to host a somewhat traditional upfront last year even as Covid-19 pandemic derailed most network’s upfront plans as advertisers scrambled to adjust their plans and other networks scrambled to fill their schedules. Zaccario says that the early upfront and network consistency has put the company in a good position heading into 2021.
“Last year actually set the table nicely for us,” Zaccario said. “Last year, throughout all the disruption and the noise and the unpredictability, we were able to retain a consistent audience. We delivered for the advertisers who were looking for a predictable source of audience to market their goods and services, and I think we got a lot of credit for that.”
Game Show Network has ramped up its original content in the past several years and is bringing to the table six originals, including returning series America Says, Common Knowledge, Get a Clue and Master Minds. Season 2 of Get a Clue, which premiered in January, saw a season-to-season lift of 11% in the women 25-54 demographic.
“We’re starting to get a lot of traction with the originals,” Zaccario said. New to the schedule this year is Chain Reaction, a revival of the long-running word chain series, which debuted in February with nearly half a million viewers in its premiere week. People Puzzler, which had initially been part of the 2020 upfront lineup but was delayed, is also to a strong start: the series debuted in January as the No. 1 new show launch since 2017 in women 25-54.

The 52nd NAACP Image Awards crowned more winners on Saturday (in addition to the awards announced earlier this week), in a ceremony once again hosted by black-ish star Anthony Anderson. The awards, of course, celebrate the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film, and will be simulcast across BET, CBS, MTV, VH1, MTV2, BET Her and LOGO.
Heading into the live show, ABC’s black-ish led the TV pack with five awards, winning trophies for Outstanding Actor (Anthony Anderson), Supporting Actor (Deon Cole) and Supporting Actress (Marsai Martin). That makes two wins for Martin, who earlier in the week snagged a victory for Best Performance by a Youth in a TV Program.
Black-ish along with HBO’s Lovecraft Country reigned supreme in total nominations, with 11 and eight a piece, respectively. Joining Lovecraft as some of the year’s first-time nominees were Starz’s P-Valley, with six nods, (including one already won by Loretta Devine for Outstanding Guest Performance), and Netflix’s Bridgerton, which saw Regé-Jean Page scoop up the award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama
Other big winners included Power Book II: Ghost and Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker with three awards each, and two victories for HBO’s Insecure: Best Comedy Series and for Issa Rae for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy.
So how did the rest of the categories shake out? Of note in our favorite genre...
- Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series: Anthony Anderson, black-ish (ABC)
- Outstanding Reality Program, Reality Competition or Game Show: Celebrity Family Feud (ABC)
- Outstanding Host in a Reality, Game Show or Variety (Series or Special): Steve Harvey, Celebrity Family Feud (ABC)

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Promising Young Woman” were named the best adapted original screenplays of 2021 at the Writers Guild Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday. While “Promising Young Woman” went into the show with a slight edge over “The Trial of the Chicago 7” for the original-screenplay award, “Borat” was a decided dark horse in the adapted-screenplay category, whose nominees also included “One Night in Miami,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “News of the World’ and “The White Tiger.”
Writers Guild winners in the screenplay categories go on to win Oscars almost two-thirds of the time, although the two awards sometimes differ because the WGA is an award strictly for screenplays for movies that were made under the terms of the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement, or similar agreements from a number of international guilds.
This year’s show was a joint presentation of the Writers Guild of America, West and the Writers Guild of America, East, which normally conduct separate but simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York. Kal Penn hosted the ceremony, with presenters that included Sacha Baron Cohen, Rachel Brosnahan, Jimmy Fallon, Ava DuVernay, Leslie Odom Jr. and Daveed Diggs. The entire show was pre-recorded, with every nominee taping an acceptance speech beforehand.

Back in March, Pluto TV unleashed a fandom tournament featuring the ones you binge watch. One of them was TPIR: The Barker Era. How far did it go? Let's check it out.
TPIR was looking for an easy win. however, DOND was a road block because of Howie and the Models, but Bob and just 3 models got them outnumbered.
Next to face was CSI NY. It may be a gritty crime drama and all but TPIR busted them with white bags of Domino Sugar. Good for mixing kool Aid too.
That's it for this week, today's consolation prize is a a video of the entire 18-hour snyder cut edition of The Suicide Squad. It's more action....and more of you yawning. Available at all Family Video Stores. Rent one tonight.
