Three weeks into Dancing With the Stars‘ newest season, the show’s creative team is standing by its controversial change in host.
During a virtual press event with reporters on Wednesday, executive producer Andrew Llinares commented on the decision to replace Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews with Tyra Banks, calling the move a necessary “evolution” for the show.
“Any show that has been on like this for many, many seasons needs to continue to evolve,” Llinares said. “It was about making the show feel fresh, feel new, maybe make it reach out to a new audience” while also “not alienating anyone who’s been watching the show for many, many years.” (Bergeron and Andrews’ exits were previously called a “new creative direction” for the competition series.)
Though Llinares didn’t offer any further explanation for Bergeron and Andrews’ firings — despite being asked whether Bergeron was let go for criticizing Sean Spicer’s casting last season — he did praise the “brilliant” format of using just one host instead of two.
“I think it’s really refreshed the pace of the show,” the EP continued. “There’s a real danger, when a show’s been on for a long time, that the audience almost gets bored of the rhythm of it. It’s changed the rhythm of the show in a really exciting way [to have Banks hosting solo]. Tyra’s doing an amazing, amazing job.”
Netflix originals dominate the rankings of the streaming giant’s most popular titles in 10 major countries, according to a new study by Wall Street firm Bernstein Research.
Led by analyst Todd Juenger, who has an “outperform” rating on Netflix stock, the report looked at viewing in the U.S., Brazil, UK, Germany, France, Italy, India, Malaysia, Japan and Korea from March 4 to September 20. It used the top 10 list that Netflix has phased in recently as an on-screen feature for subscribers, and through “brute force” ranked shows across all 10 countries to create a “master top 20.” The rankings were determined with a point system reflecting how long and at what position a given show spent on the various countries’ localized top 10 lists.
The master list across all 10 counties was topped by reality series Too Hot to Handle, followed in order by Money Heist, The Last Dance, The Umbrella Academy and Dynasty, with 19 of the top 20 being originals. In the U.S., originals comprised 15 of the top 20 most popular shows, with Outer Banks coming out on top.
Juenger, a longtime Netflix bull, has favored the view from Netflix management that too much is made of the importance to the streaming giant of licensed shows like The Office and Grey’s Anatomy. With longtime staples like Friends and Disney’s Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar movies leaving the platform to be re-deployed by rival streaming services in recent months, some skeptics expected Netflix to suffer.
While viewing of licensed fare remains significant in terms of total viewing time across the board, it is not a driver of customer acquisitions. Netflix is continuing to aggressively boost spending on originals, injecting hundreds of them a year into its offering at a cost of $15 billion in 2019. The investment has resulted in subscriber gains, especially during COVID-19. In the first half of 2020, the company added 26 million global subscribers.
Keep coming for Tyra Banks all you want, but she’s going to remain unbothered. In a TikTok video following Tuesday’s episode of “Dancing with the Stars,” the host addressed the hate she’s been getting on social media after flubbing some lines on the show.
“Tonight, I hosted the second episode of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ … and it wasn’t perfect,” Banks said. “Yeah, I had a lot of fun, but I messed up. I said the wrong words, but the thing is I kept, kept going.”
The supermodel pointed to Skai Jackson, who bungled a lift during her samba with Alan Bersten and received a 15, tying Charles Oakley, who ended up getting eliminated, for the lowest score of the night.
“She got back up and she kept going. And because of that, she’s here for another week. So the message is: I messed up this week, Skai messed up this week, but we’re gonna keep on going and going,” Banks said of the 18-year-old Disney star.
“Forgive yourself when you mess up. Stand the heck up and keep going,” she continued. “And tell the haters, ‘What? what? I don’t know your name. What? What? I don’t see you. What? What? ‘Cause I’m getting up and I’m keeping going.'”

A Little frosting to cover the wound, sir?
“Cake Boss” star Buddy Valastro is on the mend.
A “terrible accident” has landed the baker and television personality in the hospital and with one hand in rough shape, according to a photo he shared on Instagram on Wednesday.
“I was involved in a terrible accident a few days ago,” he wrote. “What do you think of my new accessory?”
The accompanying photo showed Valastro in a hospital gown with his right hand heavily bandaged.
A representative for the “Cake Boss” star said Valastro’s hand was injured at home when he tried to repair a malfunctioning bowling pin setter in his bowling alley.
“After trying to release the bowling pin from the cage mechanism, his right hand became lodged and compressed inside the unit,” his representative told CNN.
The representative said Valastro’s hand was impaled three times by a 1-1/2″ metal rod between his ring and middle fingers.
Valastro’s sons helped cut through the metal rod to release Valastro, the rep added.
Valastro received emergency surgery Sunday at Morristown Memorial Hospital and a second surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.
“It will be an uphill battle as it’s Buddy’s dominant right hand and he will need prolonged recovery & therapy,” the representative said.
Valastro is a renowned baker and a staple on several food-related reality and competition TV programs.
Today, ABC Entertainment announced an overall deal with Emmy(R) Award winner, six-time Mirrorball champion dancer and "Dancing with the Stars" judge Derek Hough. In this role, Hough will host and develop specials and entertainment programming for the network.
"Coming home to ABC and being given the opportunity to develop projects for them that are as much on brand for them as they are for me makes this even that more exciting for me," said Derek Hough.
"Derek is a creative force not just in the ballroom but also every room he enters," said Karey Burke, president, ABC Entertainment. "He has been part of our ABC family for many years; the energy and dedication he brings to every project is palpable. We value his partnership immensely and look forward to the exciting and imaginative projects to come."
Last week, Hough joined Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli as a regular judge on "Dancing with the Stars."
A multitalented entertainer and New York Times bestselling author, Derek Hough started dancing in his hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah, at age 11. Just one year later, he moved to London to live and train with the top dance coaches in the world and attend the prestigious Italia Conti performing arts school where he studied theater, music and dance.
With celebrity partners on "Dancing with the Stars" that included Brooke Burke, Jennie Garth, Ricki Lake, Nicole Scherzinger, Jennifer Grey, Kellie Pickler, Amber Riley, Amy Purdy and Bindi Irwin, Hough is best known for his innovation and daring choreography on the show. To date, Hough is the winningest professional dancer in the franchise's history with a total of six wins.
A two-time Emmy Award winner and nine-time Emmy nominee, Hough has also appeared in film, television and stage projects as an actor. He appeared in this year's "The Disney Family Singalong" specials, and made his feature film debut for director Duane Adler and producer Robert Cort in the 2013 feature film "Make Your Move" and had a recurring role on the ABC series "Nashville." His stage performances include Radio City Music Hall's "Spring Spectacular," co-starring alongside Tony Award(R)-winning Laura Benanti, as well as the critically acclaimed production of "Footloose," where he starred as the male lead in London's West End.
In May 2017, Hough joined Jennifer Lopez and Ne-Yo at the judges table for the NBC series "World of Dance"; and in December 2016, Hough starred with Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Martin Short and Harvey Fierstein in NBC's "Hairspray Live!"
Hough can also add bestselling author to his list of credits. His memoir "Taking the Lead: Lessons from a Life in Motion" hit stands in August 2014 and was rapidly named to the prestigious New York Times Best Seller list during two nonconsecutive time periods.
Ellen DeGeneres returned to the studio for her talk show’s Season 18 premiere, and she was joined by an enormous elephant in the room.
As seen in the video above — released ahead of the full episode’s syndicated broadcast on Monday — DeGeneres opened the season by acknowledging recent allegations of bullying and toxic workplace culture at the daytime series, which had prompted an internal investigation by parent company WarnerMedia over the summer.
“I learned that things happened here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously, and I want to say I am so sorry to the people that were affected,” DeGeneres began, echoing a previous letter she sent to her crew after the allegations surfaced. “I know that I’m in a position of privilege and power, and I realize that with that comes responsibility, and I take responsibility for what happens at my show. This is The Ellen DeGeneres Show. I am Ellen DeGeneres.”
Though she didn’t offer many behind-the-scenes details, DeGeneres added that “we have made the necessary changes” to the show, and “today, we are starting a new chapter.”
The host went on to address specific rumors about her off-screen behavior, which allegedly does not align with her on-screen persona and “Be kind to one another” sign-off.
“The truth is, I am that person that you see on TV. I am also a lot of other things,” she explained. “Sometimes I get sad. I get mad. I get anxious. I get frustrated. I get impatient. And I am working on all of that. I am a work in progress… I don’t think I’m that good [of an actress] that I could come out here every day for 17 years and fool you. This is me, and my intention is to always be the best person I can be. And if I’ve ever let someone down, if I’ve ever hurt their feelings, I’m so sorry for that.”
During the summer, a series of bombshell reports from Variety and BuzzFeed brought the show’s workplace culture to light, with former employees citing everything from racist comments made by senior producers to staffers getting fired for taking time off to attend family funerals. The show ultimately fired executive producers Ed Glavin, Kevin Leman and Jonathan Norman, all of whom were named in the allegations. Meanwhile, many of DeGeneres’ celebrity pals — including Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara, comedian Kevin Hart and fellow daytime personality Steve Harvey — came to her defense
Contestants can try their vocal chops in ‘Sing On!,’ Netflix’s karaoke show. There are different variants of the series available already – from Spain and Germany. The premise is straightforward. Performers need to be familiar with the song lyrics as they try to match the vocal performance. They’re judged partly on their talent, and the rest is based on audience preferences.
There’s a vocal analyzer that sees how the contestants match with the original song. However, the results are kept from them, and the elimination process depends on the audience. Apart from the grand prize, there are smaller cash prizes to be won along the way. Overall, it is an entertaining contest, and all of it plays out in one location. Curious to know where ‘Sing On!’ has been filmed? We have got you covered in that regard.
Sing On has been filmed at Pinewood Studios, Buckinghamshire. The studio is famous for being home to numerous films, shows, pop promos, and commercials. Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath in Buckinghamshire serves as the perfect location for a show like ‘Sign On!’ because the sound stages are ideal for recording.
Most of the post-production work can take place there as well. As a long-established and reputable establishment, Pinewood Studios has a team of talented professionals in the employee roster, who can assist in projects being filmed there. For nearly eighty years, Pinewood Studios has maintained a stellar reputation and grown into a global brand, which is why a show like ‘Sing On!’ would naturally head there for the shooting.
The television studios in the facility deserve special mention. They have been home to some very popular productions and offer facilities to suit every purpose of the shoot. The Pinewood television studios support light entertainment, quiz shows, sitcoms, and pilots. A special attraction is its ability to handle live broadcasting as well as performances that have a large audience turnout. For a series like ‘Sing On!,’ the latter becomes rather crucial since the audience participation is elemental to the show’s structure.
Apart from technical and post-production support, Pinewood also offers flexible studios and creative workshop space – all of which contribute to an effortless production procedure. Thus, ‘Sing On!’ seems to have made an excellent choice in picking Pinewood out as the filming spot. The eight-episode series makes fantastic use of the location and facilities to deliver a memorable experience.
