Spring is up and running, but we compare those 2 stories from a seasonal affective disorder in the Yay & Yawn of March.

The yay:  Mental Samurai. Take a brain test, add in a thrill ride and you got a nice program for the spring season on Fox with a Brat Pack alum.

The Yawn: Cash Quiz Live. Trying to get into the live trivia app pool this past Sunday, it wanted to be the next best thing, but it took many black screens for players and a jackpot of......$100. After 2 weeks of trying, as of today this happened......

Well, you at least played yourself.

After this commercial word, GSN brings back a top card. Draw, pardner!

That's.......when Game Show Live returns.

(fade to break)

Jordan:  Some members of our viewing audience will receive....

A supply of food from Grubhub. What's even better is that if you sign up as a driver, you'll make extra money delivering from restaurants in the city. Isn't that wonderful? Now back to our driving maniac, Pierre Kelly!

Me: Thank you Joeykat, we're back folks, you're inside what is Game Show Live!  Later on, new details on the newly colorful floor of the DWTS ballroom. Wait until you see what it is.

Some networks continually reinvent themselves in an attempt to keep audiences interested. But over the past year, Game Show Network discovered that the best way to retain and build viewers is to stop trying to reinvent the wheel when it came to programming—and the network's own name.
So as the network—which has ditched its GSN moniker and is known once again by its previous name—heads into this year's upfront agency meetings, it's doing so by emphasizing the ratings growth that has resulted from its return to "fun, simple games," said John Zaccario, evp, ad sales. It's a continuation of the strategy that the network first unveiled during last year's upfront talks.
When Fran Shea, evp, programming and marketing, joined Game Show Network in late 2017, she helped it pivot back to traditional game show formats and scheduling. Its series are now "stripped" across all five weeknights, just as syndicated game shows are, and reflect the method that its audience prefers to watch them. That includes a trio of new game shows introduced in the last year—Caroline and Friends, America Says and Common Knowledge—all of which the network has renewed.
The shows had been introduced in the fringe daypart and improved their respective time periods between 10-15 percent in total audience and adults 25-54 demos, before being moved to prime time. They helped spark a ratings resurgence at the network: In total day and adults 25-54, the network's ratings are up between high-single and double digits year over year, said Zaccario.
And the network welcomed 14 million new viewers last year.
Game Show Network's number of original hours has tripled since Shea's arrival, from 93 in 2019 to almost 350 hours slated for next year. As part of its strategy shift, the network also gave its own name a retro spin last July, reverting back to Game Show Network from GSN to further emphasize what it does best. "We heard from the core audience that they want more traditional game shows and less of the kinds of things that we were feeding them two and three years ago. It made sense to use that as the brand," said Zaccario. "It speaks to exactly who we are."
The trio of new shows quickly connected with viewers. Quiz show Common Knowledge, which debuted in January and is hosted by *Nsync's Joey Fatone, became Game Show Network's most-watched show in total viewers. America Says, which is hosted by actor John Michael Higgins and features two teams of friends and family competing to answer fill-in-the-blank survey responses, is its No. 1 show in women 25-54. Caroline & Friends, in which comedian Caroline Rhea picks her favorite funny and cute viral videos with help from celeb pals, also has ratings momentum.
Joining those returning shows are a pair of new series, both of which will also be stripped. Best Ever Trivia Show pits three contestants against three trivia experts, while Catch 21—which combines the classic card game 21 with pop culture trivia—is a reboot of a show that aired on the network a decade ago.
In this upfront, Zaccario will seek more brand partnerships for Game Show Network Daily Draw, a short-form sweepstakes in which a $500 winner is announced each night. The show yielded more than 2 million entries last year. "It was a way to make our viewers feel as if they were contestants, and because they shoot that frequently, we're able to integrate brands into that environment," Zaccario said. "Now that we've had some success there, we'll be more aggressive [this year]."
In addition to its new and returning series, Game Show Network is developing several new shows, including Mannerz (from former Fox late night host Spike Feresten, a survey-based show about proper behavior in modern social situations), Crazy Awkward Love Game (a blind date-type show executive produced by Howie Mandel in which the potential suitors' family members are interviewed) and People Puzzler (inspired by People Magazine's pop culture crossword puzzle).

Here's something that'll catch on....

Paddy McGuinness presents Catchpoint - BBC One's gameshow with difference. This is the very first physical game show where contestants need quick reflexes and brains in order to win the cash prize.
Ten giant screens have balls hidden above them which drop from the correct answer. Contestants must think fast because if they choose the wrong screen and miss the ball falling they risk losing their place in the game. The series begins on Saturday 23 March.
The premise of the game is simple - don't drop the ball! In the studio, ten large rectangular LED screens are positioned along the back wall of the Catch Zone. These screens will display the answers to each question that the players will face. Suspended above the Catch Zone are ten trapdoors - each containing a ball. Only the trapdoor that is located directly above the correct answer screen will open and send a ball plummeting to the ground.
All the players must do is stand in front of the screen that they think is displaying the correct answer, press the button to release the ball and then catch the ball when it drops from the correct answer trapdoor. If the player is standing in the right place, it should be a piece of cake but get it wrong and they'll have to rely on fast moves and quick reflexes not to drop that ball!
With a variety of rounds, all leading up to an exciting finale where a cash prize is at stake, Catchpoint is a brand new family-friendly game show, combining physical fun with general knowledge questions, in the ultimate battle of brains and balls.

You remember Kristin Callavari from "The Hills?" Well.......

Television personality and reality star Kristin Cavallari is tapped to host the brand-new PARADISE HOTEL, the innovative unscripted dating competition series in which sexy singles try to remain in paradise for as long as possible by pairing up. In the reinvention of the hit series, viewers will play along at home using social media to try and influence the action on the show.
The trailblazing series will debut with a special, two-hour premiere Thursday, May 9 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, and will air three nights a week in an "as it happens" format during its five-week run. Following the Thursday night premiere, the series will air on Mondays (starting May 13 at 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), Wednesdays (starting May 15 at 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and, with LIVE elements, on Thursdays (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).
"Kristin grew up on the frontlines of reality television and is the perfect host to introduce PARADISE HOTEL to a new generation of viewers," said Rob Wade, President, Alternative Entertainment and Specials, FOX Entertainment. "The show is a fun balance of romantic love, cutthroat competition and humor, and Kristin's unique experience, especially with live television, makes her the best person to navigate the wild, unpredictable moments."
"I'm so excited to be hosting PARADISE HOTEL this summer!" said Cavallari. "This show literally has everything - dating, love triangles, alliances, competition - and I can't wait to stir the pot and have a front-row seat to all the drama!"
The modernized version of the international hit is executive-produced by SallyAnn Salsano (495 Productions, "Jersey Shore Family Vacation," "Jersey Shore," "The Bachelor"); Becca Walker ("Love Island," "I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!"); James Sunderland ("America's Got Talent," "SafeWord," "Lip Sync Battle Shorties"); Paul Osborne ("Big Brother," "Celebrity Wife Swap," "Secret Millionaire"); and Celia Taylor ("50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy," "A League of Your Own, with James Corden," "An Idiot Abroad") of Mentorn Media, the original creators of the groundbreaking "Paradise Hotel" format.

Okay, here's the Deal....

Most of us are familiar with the highly popular television game show Deal or No Deal. But many of us realise that we have not the chance of a snowflake's survival in Hades to ever make it onto prime-time TV, let alone leave with millions in the bank; or rather, millions in the briefcase thanks to the bank.
Well, that is all about to change thanks to the brilliant team of developers at Evolution Gaming. The live casino specialists recently announced that they will be launching a live casino Deal or No Deal game soon. Much like the contestants on the popular television show, players will have the opportunity to work their way through a selection of levels in the hopes of sticking it out until the very last and making it all the way to the final briefcase.

Buried Treasure.

Ahoy.....we found a discovery.

The Exit List. You remember the UK version, right? It became a short lived entity running just 7 shows. For those of you not up on your UK quizzes, it was this as was in the rulebook:

Two contestants play as a team in each episode, first trying to accumulate as much money as possible by answering questions, then attempting to win it by recalling the answers they have given as their "Exit List."
The main game is played in the "Memory Maze," an arrangement of 26 identical rooms in six rows. Each room contains a vault with a computer display and two glass cylinders inserted vertically into a console. The first row, where the team enters, has one room; the second and third rows have three each; the fourth row has five; and the fifth and sixth rows have seven each. Upon entering a room and activating its display, the team is confronted with one of the following:
  • A question for a prize of £1,000, £2,000, £3,000, £4,000, £5,000, or £10,000, increasing from first row to sixth;
  • A question for a prize of £100,000, hidden in one room on the sixth row; or
  • One of five "Panic Rooms" randomly hidden throughout the Memory Maze.

When a question is found, the host reads it to them and gives four possible answers. The contestants have 30 seconds to answer, starting as soon as the fourth choice appears on the room's display, and cannot change their minds once they verbally state that they want to "lock in" their choice. A correct response allows the contestants to retrieve the cash value of the question from the room's vault and add it to a briefcase they must carry with them throughout the game. The correct answer is then added to their Exit List. If the contestants answer incorrectly or fail to lock in an answer in time, they win no money and all four choices are added to the Exit List as a group.

If the contestants enter a Panic Room, they are shown a series of images and related information in quick succession, then must recall 10 requested portions of it in 30 seconds. Multiple attempts on a particular item are allowed, by one or both contestants, and they may pass on an item and return to it later if time allows. No money is at stake in the Panic Rooms.
If the contestants successfully complete the challenge, their Exit List remains intact. Otherwise, any missed answers are turned into a "Panic Code" by combining the first letter/number of each to form an alphanumeric sequence. This Panic Code is then added to the Exit List.

When the contestants choose to exit, each removes one of the two glass cylinders from the console in the room where they have stopped. One cylinder is shorter than the other; the contestant who draws this one must remain in the room while his/her partner exits the Memory Maze. He/she dons a pair of headphones so that he/she cannot hear any discussions between the partner and the host. The partner is presented with a cash offer, based on the accumulated winnings and the length of the Exit List, and must decide whether to accept or reject it. The decision is kept secret from everyone else at this point.
After the contestant still in the Memory Maze removes the headphones, the lights to mark the team's route are turned off and he/she must backtrack to the entrance one room at a time, following that exact route and carrying the case of money. In each room, starting with the one in which the team decided to exit, he/she must state one item on the Exit List. He/she must stay in a room until recalling an item and may offer multiple guesses without penalty. The items may be recalled in any order, but any groups of four items (the result of a missed question) must be given together in order to count; in addition, any Panic Codes must be recited in exact order. The contestant is given 10 seconds for each room that the team visited. Entering a room not on the route triggers a klaxon and requires the contestant to find the correct next step as the clock continues to run.
After the contestant either succeeds or fails in exiting the Memory Maze within the given time, his/her partner's decision is revealed. If the partner has rejected the offer, the team wins all the money they accumulated for a successful exit, or nothing in the event of a failure. However, if the partner has accepted, the team wins that amount of cash regardless of the outcome for the exit attempt.

And all I can say for that is.....

If you're still here with me, You've seen the pilot and it is of course, hosted by Mike Greenberg fresh off of Duel. The setup is different, but Mike's hosting is somewhat subpar when he had to rush it. Also, the rooms were complicated as it was in the UK version. That's why ABC decided not to, but hey, if Netflix or Hulu were to try it.......why not?
