The whatstrending.com Opening Toss-Up story.
We have a Game Show Live! follow along on the Top Chef case.
After deliberating for more than 19 hours, a jury has acquitted all four Boston Teamsters who were accused of attempting to extort driving jobs from the producers of Top Chef three years ago. The not-guilty verdicts come a day after the jury forewoman sent a note to U.S. District Court Judge Douglas Woodlock that one of the jurors “is assuming guilt over innocence” and that the jurors “are not sure how to proceed from here.”
The jury of nine women and three men were deciding the fate of Local 25 Teamsters John Fidler, Daniel Redmond, Robert Cafarelli and Michael Ross, who were charged with attempting to shake down the show for unwanted, unneeded and superfluous services under the threat of violence and the fear of economic harm. Defense attorneys counter that the men’s actions on the picket line that day in June 2014 were part of a legitimate labor dispute.
As first reported by Deadline, the Teamsters had set up a picket line on June 10, 2014, outside the Steel & Rye restaurant in Milton, a suburb of Boston, where the show was filming. When Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi tried to cross their picket line, several Teamsters rushed her minivan, and according to testimony during the trial, one of the Teamsters leaned into her passenger-side window “so close she could smell him” and threatened to “smash her pretty face in.” Lakshmi testified that she was terrified and thought he was going to punch her. The Teamsters kept at it for hours, showering cast and crew with racist, sexist and homophobic slurs, and slashing the tires on nine production vehicles.
Even so, police were present and made no arrests, and the jury decided that no federal crimes had been committed either.
“We are disappointed in today’s verdict,” said acting U.S. Attorney William Weinreb. “The government believed, and continues to believe, that the conduct in this case crossed the line and constituted a violation of federal law. The defendants’ conduct was an affront to all of the hard-working and law-abiding members of organized labor. We will continue to aggressively prosecute extortion in all its forms to ensure that Boston remains a safe and welcoming place to do business.”
The defense team didn’t put on a single witness, but in closing arguments, their lawyers told the jury there was no evidence that the accused had knowingly tried to extort the show for no-show jobs and that their actions that day on the picket line were part of a legitimate labor dispute. The proof of that, they argued, came from one of the prosecution’s own witnesses, Bravo executive David O’Connell, who offered to pay them just to go away. “I didn’t want them on the set,” he testified. “I offered to pay them double to go away.” The Teamsters, however, “rejected” that offer, he testified. “They wanted to be paid under a legitimate collective bargaining agreement. … I knew they wanted to get into reality television.”
In the end, that might have won the case for the defendants. “If the Teamsters had this bad purpose — to extort in order to get no-show jobs — that would have been the place for it to happen,” defense attorney Kevin Barron said in his closing argument. “But it didn’t. It was money offered, money refused.” And that, he said, is “the gaping hole in the government’s case.”
O’Connell’s testimony about offering to pay the Teamsters double to go away “was one of a handful of surprises that came out in our favor,” Carmine Lepore, attorney for Cafarelli, told Deadline after the verdict. “That’s traditional extortion, but it couldn’t have been more clear that what they were seeking by refusing that offer were legitimate jobs.”
And that clearly undercut the prosecution’s theory that the defendants had been trying to force the production company, Magical Elves, to hire Teamsters to perform superfluous services – a key element to the attempted extortion charge.
Lepore said the jury “got it right. The government didn’t have anything to support their theory of extortion. The linchpin was whether they were seeking additional services or replacement services” by pressuring the company to replace nonunion drivers with union drivers, which is perfectly legal.
“From the onset,” he said of the defense team, “we were scratching our heads, wondering, ‘Why are we here? How is this a federal crime? What do they have besides some name calling and bad behavior?’”
The four men had been charged with attempted extortion and conspiracy to extort. If convicted, each had faced a maximum of 20 years in prison. A fifth Teamster, Mark Harrington, the local’s former secretary-treasurer, pleaded guilty to the same charges in December and was sentenced to six months of home confinement.

But first, Bachelor in Paradise might've had a problem. Can this be true?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbusENG6hCE
Bachelor in Paradise's two-night premiere continued with the events that transpired after production's temporary shutdown -- including a candid conversation among the returning cast members in Mexico -- due to the DeMario Jackson and Corinne Olympios scandal.
After airing Season 3 Bachelor in Paradise couple Carly Waddell and Evan Bass' spectacular wedding that was filmed in Mexico this past June, the entire cast was shown returning to Paradise after a halt in production for a Warner Bros. investigation into allegations of misconduct. (No evidence of sexual assault or wrongdoing on the cast and staff was discovered).
The entire original Season 4 cast was present, except for DeMario and Corinne. Bachelor in Paradise host Chris Harrison thought it was necessary to have a group discussion before filming resumed about how everyone was feeling as well as the incident itself and what allegedly did or did not happen.
Chris explained Warner Bros. had hired an outside firm to look into Bachelor in Paradise footage as well as conduct interviews with witnesses. Since the show, its staff and cast were all cleared of misconduct allegations, everyone agreed they were happy with the results of the investigation.
The cast seemed to agree that nothing serious even happened between DeMario and Corinne, suggesting the Bachelor in Paradise producer who initially filed the complaint had blown the situation out of proportion.
ABC has opted not to air footage of the incident in question, and no specifics were shared about what actually happened between the two cast members, who did not return.
Instead, the episode featured Harrison asking the cast if they agreed with Warner Bros.’ call to resume production, and everyone did. Raven Gates said that nothing “bad” happened between Olympios and Jackson, and that she hopes the scandal doesn’t deter “actual victims” from speaking out.
The conversation also included a debate on whether race was a factor and whether those who supported Jackson were implicitly “slut-shaming” Olympios.
As might be expected, plenty of fans took to Twitter to weigh in about the episode.
“You can practically see the cast reading the ‘ABC isn’t liable’ cue cards the lawyers are holding up behind the cameras,” one user wrote.
“They literally discussed everything BUT what happened between Corinne and DeMario,” another viewer tweeted.
Chris Harrison appeared on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday, where he was asked about the much-debated sexual encounter between contestants Corinne Olympios and DeMario Jackson.
“You will see that Corinne and DeMario, other than the fact that they were very involved in this, had very little to do with the entire incident as far as filing a complaint or allegations against one another,” Harrison said. “And that’s what created this frustrating situation.”
“It was someone who really wasn’t there and didn’t see or hear anything that kind of got this ball rolling, and so it was kind of this domino effect that I guess led to us having to finally say, ‘Look, we need to take everybody’s safety, and that is the utmost importance,'” the franchise mainstay continued.
Don't cheat on this next story....
Channel 4 has hit back at cheating claims circling the new series of Child Genius.
During the first episode, on Tuesday (August 15), 12-year-old contestant Olivia hesitated after she was asked to complete the station name that began with "Kensal" – she then seemed to look towards her mum who appeared to make an 'up' hand gesture.
Olivia then correctly answered "Kensal Rise" and viewers accused Olivia's mum Susan of cheating by raising her hand.
But Channel 4 has denied that any cheating took place during the episode. "The independent adjudicator is satisfied there was no cheating taking place," a spokesperson for the channel told Digital Spy.
The story doesn't end there though, with last night's (August 16) episode showing Susan airing her own accusations of cheating.
"There were a few family members who were mouthing the answers. I'm saying to you with two eyes, two glasses, that's what I saw," she was seen telling adjudicator Olivia van der Werff.

MTV crashes a different party.
MTV International has ordered 10 episodes of a pop-up music game show called Crash Karaoke.
The Viacom network has given the green light for the show that will see hosts Hannah Rad and Dylan Landon “crash" what a series description calls "unsuspecting locations and challenge people to karaoke battles for cash."
They will disrupt "business as usual" at such locations as fast-food restaurants and "attempt to charm two volunteers into a head-to-head karaoke showdown for a cash prize," MTV said. "Contestants will be asked to spin the Crash Wheel to randomly select a style of music to perform. A mix of hit songs serve as the soundtrack for the series, from current tracks and global anthems to the most iconic karaoke throwbacks from the '80s."
There are no judges on the 30-minute show as the crowd ultimately decides who wins.
"Crash Karaoke is an innovative twist on the traditional game show that’s anchored in music and embodies MTV’s bold, unpredictable personality," said Bruce Gillmer, head of music and music talent, Global Entertainment Group, Viacom. “We’re excited to disrupt everyday life in some of the most unlikely locations and pass the mic to the most fearless performers — from the great, to the outrageous, and cringe-worthy — and bring our audience along for the ride.”
The show's international rollout is set to begin later this year. Executive producers are Adam Dolgins, Brian Flanagan, Anthony Amoia, Mike Amoia and Sean Lee of Switchblade Entertainment, and Gillmer, Jennifer Demme Harris and Adriana Cornejo for MTV International.

"These All Stars represent the best of the breasts, legs and thighs. They are giving everything and you're not going to want to miss it!"
"The massive swell of new and longtime fans of 'RuPaul's Drag Race' is nothing short of incredible," said Pamela Post, SVP Original Programming & Development at VH1. "We are motivated now more than ever to ensure 'Drag Race' remains a shining example of inclusion and community, as well as fierce fashions and legendary lip-syncs."
"RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars" follows a jaw-dropping season nine of "RuPaul's Drag Race," which was the most-watched in series history. The finale trended across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and was the #1 most social program the day of broadcast as viewers watched Sasha Velour crowned America's Next Drag Superstar.
"RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked" provides viewers a raw, behind-the-scenes look as the competing queens as they await to find out who will lip sync for their life. The companion series will return just in time for the milestone 10th season of "RuPaul's Drag Race," debuting in spring 2018.
