Before that happens, next month is Red Nose Day.
Celebrating Red Nose Day for the third year in a row, NBC has anchored a special night of programming on Thursday, May 25 with Chris Hardwick set to host the "The Red Nose Day Special" at 10 p.m. In addition, Academy Award winner Julia Roberts and other stars will partake in Red Nose Day-themed programming throughout the night that will both entertain viewers and give them an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of kids in need.
Red Nose Day is an annual campaign that uses the power of entertainment to raise money and awareness for children living in poverty.
"Red Nose Day's effort to lift children out of poverty is centered around heart and humanity, and we're excited to create a night of programming that reflects this. From Julia Roberts and Bear Grylls showing viewers the impact of their donations, to celebrities challenging themselves on "American Ninja Warrior" to raise funds and awareness, this will be an incredible night," said Paul Telegdy, President, Alternative and Reality Group, NBC Entertainment. "We are thrilled to have Chris' wit and compassion championing the evening as our host for 'The Red Nose Day Special.'"
"Celebrity Ninja Warrior for Red Nose Day" at 8 p.m. ET/PT will be followed by a very special 9 p.m. episode of "Running Wild with Bear Grylls for Red Nose Day" with Roberts venturing to Kenya, leading up to NBC's third annual "The Red Nose Day Special" hosted by Hardwick at 10 p.m. The three shows will be seamlessly tied together in celebration of Red Nose Day, with calls to action to donate through each of the three programs.
In the first celebrity edition of "American Ninja Warrior," nine brave stars will tackle the course, all in the name of charity.
Matt Iseman and Akbar Gbajabiamila serve as hosts, along with Kristine Leahy who co-hosts. The intrepid celebrity ninjas include Stephen Amell ("Arrow"), Erika Christensen ("Parenthood"), Jeff Dye ("Better Late Than Never"), two-time Olympic gold medalist Ashton Eaton, Nikki Glaser ( "Not Safe with Nikki Glaser"), Derek Hough ("World of Dance"), Natalie Morales ("TODAY" and "Access Hollywood") former New York Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher ("Spartan Ultimate Team Challenge") and Mena Suvari ("American Woman").
Each of the celebrities will be paired with an elite ninja who serves as both coach and cheerleader - helping them prepare mentally and physically for their run.
From the Floating Steps to the Warped Wall, each of the celebs will have to face up to six challenging obstacles that call upon their upper body strength, agility and stamina.
The elite ninja advisers include fan favorites and National "finalists" Kevin Bull (coaching Ashton Eaton); Kacy Catanzaro (coaching Stephen Amell), Drew Drechsel (coaching Nick Swisher), Natalie Duran (coaching Mena Suvari), Daniel Gil (coaching Derek Hough), Jessie Graff (coaching Nikki Glaser), Grant McCartney (coaching Natalie Morales), Meagan Martin (coaching Jeff Dye) and Flip Rodriguez (coaching Erika Christensen).
Throughout the night viewers will be entertained, learn about the programs supported by Red Nose Day that are helping to change the lives of children and have the opportunity to support the charity through calls to donate, making a real difference for kids in need here in the U.S. and around the world. This is the first time the night of programming for Red Nose Day has included special editions of existing NBC shows, which is evidence of the network's deep partnership and commitment to this important initiative.
Red Nose Day is a fundraising campaign run by the non-profit organization Comic Relief Inc., a registered U.S. 501(c)(3) public charity.
Money raised supports programs that ensure children in need are safe, healthy and educated, both in the United States and in some of the poorest communities around the world.
Beneficiaries of Red Nose Day grants include charity organizations such as Boys & Girls Clubs of America; charity:water; Children's Health Fund, Feeding America; Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance; National Council of La Raza; Save the Children; and the Global Fund.
The spirit of Heatter-Quigley lives on.
“Hip Hop Squares” has been renewed for second season at VH1. The show from Ice Cube’s production banner delivered VH1’s highest-rated premiere in more than a year in its March 13 bow.
“ ‘Hip Hop Squares’ smashed ratings records as one of the most watched new series of the year,” said Chris McCarthy, president of VH1, MTV and Logo. “We couldn’t ask for a better creative force to steer the show than Ice Cube or a better partner than CBS Distribution, and we are thrilled to keep this party going.”
The series is hosted by DeRay Davis and exec produced by Cube and his Cube Vision production company in conjunction with Jesse Collins Entertainment, Scott St. John and Jeff Kwatinetz’s The Firm. “Hip Hop Squares” revisits the classic game show format with celebrity players drawn from the world of hip hop, comedy and entertainment.
“The positive response to ‘Hip Hop Squares’ has been an incredible experience,” said Cube. “Viewers can look forward to a louder, crazier party with the next season.”
“Hip Hop Squares” was one of a number of new and returning premieres that boosted VH1’s fortunes in the first quarter. The show bowed to 3.2 million viewers in aggregate and a 1.6 in adults 18-49, making it a slam dunk for a renewal.
While VH1’s sibling network MTV is in the midst of a remodeling of its lineup, VH1 has been plugging along with solid returns from its core schedule. The channel has logged seven consecutive quarters of year-over-year ratings growth on a total day measure, with this past quarter marking 2% gain in total viewers and a 2% gain in adults 18-49 over Q1 2016. That modest increase was notable given that VH1 logged a 29% year-over-year gain in adults 18-49 in Q1 2016.
The backbone of VH1’s schedule remains the “Love and Hip Hop” franchise. The Atlanta edition of the show logged its highest-rated premiere to date, delivering a 3.0 rating in adults 18-49 with its sixth season opener on March 6.
Season five of “Black Ink Crew” and the move of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” from Logo to VH1 also performed for the channel during the quarter.
Hail Spartan!
NBC's "Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge" set its announcing crew for its upcoming eight-episode second season. Hailing from the producers of the Emmy Award-nominated competition series "American Ninja Warrior," the series raises the bar on obstacle course racing and ups the ante for teams whose will and determination will be pushed to the limits as they strive to come out on top. The second season begins Monday, June 12 at 10 p.m., following a two-hour edition of "American Ninja Warrior."
Decorated U.S. Winter Olympian Apolo Ohno and ESPN and radio personality Kelvin Washington will deliver the play by play action to audiences as the teams race through the demanding course. MJ Acosta returns as a sideline reporter alongside Major League Baseball all-star Nick Swisher, who joins "Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge" following a 12-season career that included a World Series championship with the New York Yankees.
"Apolo, Kelvin, MJ and Nick bring a firsthand understanding of the rigors these teams endure as they work together to take on this intense and grueling new course," said Paul Telegdy, President, Alternative and Reality Group, NBC Entertainment. "With these four experts at the helm, viewers will get an up close look at the adrenaline, teamwork and sheer excitement of every episode."
Inspired by Spartan Race - the creators of the world's most demanding obstacle course races - "Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge" takes team competitions to a new level. Groups of friends, families and co-workers are put to the ultimate test as they attempt to complete a grueling half-mile Spartan course packed with never-before-seen obstacles designed to challenge the will and endurance of all who attempt it. Shot at night with an industrial backdrop, each team will compete on one of the most punishing courses ever devised and must push through the pain to win $250,000.
In each episode, six teams of five - four athletes alongside the support of a team captain - will compete. No team can get through the course and reach the finish line without working together. From rope-burning climbs to crawls through cold, wet mud, the competition culminates with some of the most back-breaking obstacles ever built. Along the course teams will encounter the relentless tire swing and the dreaded slip wall, plus the debut of rigorous new obstacles that have never been seen before in any competition.
Last summer, "Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge" averaged a 1.3 rating, 5 share in adults 18-49 and 4.2 million viewers overall, according to "live plus seven day" averages from Nielsen Media Research. "Spartan" ranked #1 or #2 in the time period with each of its three special Monday telecasts in adults 18-49 versus ABC and CBS competition. It was a strong upscale show, indexing at a 118 among adults 18-49 living in homes with $100K+ incomes (with 100 representing an average concentration of those homes).
NBCUniversal International Formats is the global distributor of the "Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge" format.
"Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge" is executive produced by the "American Ninja Warrior" team of A. Smith & Co. Productions' founders Arthur Smith and Kent Weed. Brady Connell also serves as executive producer alongside Joe DeSena and Jeffrey Connor from Spartan Race Inc.
