It’s been 11 months since “The Amazing Race” shut down production on Season 33 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and unsurprisingly, it’s still TBD when production will resume.
“We are absolutely champing at the bit to get back out and shoot ‘The Amazing Race.’ I know [creators] Elise [Doganieri] and Bertram [van Munster] are definitely keen to get the team back together and for us to go,” Phil Keoghan said Wednesday during a virtual panel for his other CBS show, “Tough as Nails,” at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. “As far as when, I mean, if you have any inside information, please let me know. We’ve got to make sure the world is safe.”
“The Amazing Race” was one of the first shows to suspend production, doing so in late February after filming three episodes with stops in England and Scotland. While dozens of shows have resumed production with COVID protocols in place, it’s obviously a totally different beast with a globe-trotting series. “Safety is paramount. It’s No. 1. We have an impeccable safety record on ‘Amazing Race,'” Keoghan noted. “Keeping people safe is our No. 1 priority. We gotta get people out to make a TV show, but we want to get them home safely as well.”
Keoghan was able to make a second season of “Tough as Nails,” which premieres Feb. 10, in COVID times. The production followed strict measures, sometimes reapplying seven times to get a challenge cleared. “Some shows get COVID clearance to shoot in one location; we had over two dozen,” he pointed out. The Emmy winner credits the production team for ensuring they got through the whole season without a single positive test.
“I think the cast agreed that they felt very safe,” he said. “With regards to safety and making sure everyone was healthy, it was our No. 1 priority, to make sure we got out of this COVID-free, and I’m very proud that we have done that.”
“Tough as Nails” premieres Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 8/7c on CBS.

Let’s Make A Deal host Wayne Brady is to guest star in Showtime’s American Gigolo pilot.
Brady, who had previously featured in The CW’s Black Lightning, will play Lorenzo in the TV reboot of the Richard Gere film.
Lorenzo in the best friend, roommate and mentor of male escort Julian Kaye, played by series star Jon Bernthal. If the project goes to series, he will recur.
The project hails from David Hollander, Paramount TV Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Television.
Written and directed by Hollander, American Gigolo the series is a present-day reimagining of the iconic film. Bernthal will play Julian Kaye, who is introduced 18 years after he’s been arrested for murder and struggling to find his footing in the Los Angeles sex industry, while seeking the truth about the setup that sent him to prison all those years ago and also hoping to reconnect with Michelle (Gretchen Mol), his one true love.
Save me a cupcake, would you?
The façade of the Whitley house is divided into the gameshow’s iconic blue grid, with four trivia categories. The “IN THE CHANNEL” category is devoted to places to visit in the Irish Channel. The “QUARANTINI” column includes COVID-era cocktail suggestions. The “WALK IT OUT” category concerns the Crescent City’s endless number of Carnival marching groups. And “STREET SMART” tests our knowledge of the origins of New Orleans’ quirky street names.
Whitley’s Jeopardy house is interactive. To play the game passersby can use their cellphones to digitally access the answers and questions using one of those QR bar code grids. Erin Whitley said 50 or 60 people have played so far. Unfortunately, she said, there are no cash prizes, just “bragging rights.”
Erin, 29 hails from Mandeville. Aaron, 30, is from Pensacola. They’re both members of the Funky Uptown Krewe, which usually welcomes Carnival with a rowdy, rolling streetcar party on Jan. 6. But that was called off this year, thanks to you know what.
The Whitleys are also part of a startup, regionwide association of do-it-yourself house decorators called The Krewe of House Floats. The group has divided up the city into neighborhood subkrewes. The goal is to produce socially distanced walking/driving tours as COVID-safe substitutes for conventional parades. The group is in the process of producing a map of all the float houses.
To watch the float houses pop up across the city may be witnessing the beginning of a new custom. Who knows, in the future, float houses might be as much a part of Carnival as king cakes? Part of the pleasure is the individuality. Float houses are like costuming for architecture.
This is the site of the “Jeopardy” float house, one of the most charming coronavirus antidotes so far.
Where is 2371 Chippewa St.?
And we move right along.
Not exactly a true crowd in mind......
When To Tell the Truth was rebooted in 2016, it kept the same general format, but with a modern revolving group of panelists and a new host — Anthony Anderson. Now, with another season on the horizon, new potential fans have questions about how the show works, if there's a live studio audience, and when Season 6 was filmed.
Once upon a time, To Tell the Truth did feature a live in-studio audience. Most game shows of the past did and, in earlier seasons of the revamped version, before the COVID-19 pandemic struck the world, it too had a live audience. It's unclear if, going forward, some seasons will have to nix a live audience due to social distancing rules or, at the very least, be much smaller so producers can space them out.
But, for the most part, the show is big on having an audience in-house to make every comment and wild moment that much more exciting. Because not only do the celebrity panelists have to make themselves look like fools while guessing correctly and incorrectly while they try to figure out who the impostor is, but whoever loses at the end has to tweet out a lie about themselves.
It's all in good fun, but as with most shows of this nature, having a live audience makes the atmosphere even lighter.
Because To Tell the Truth isn't filmed live, ABC could film multiple seasons at one time and keep the episodes for when a new season rolls around. The Season 6 promo makes it seem like an audience was in the studio, so either it's footage from an older taping or the network figured out a way to safely film during the COVID-19 pandemic. Regardless, it's still the same game show to keep you guessing from the comfort of your own home.
