The New College Try

The BBC has responded to accusations of rigging the teams on University Challenge.

University College London professor Frank Coffield recently slammed the long-running BBC Two game show, per The Guardian, for allegedly favouring Cambridge and Oxford-based teams.

He claimed University Challenge currently allows multiple Oxford and Cambridge colleges to enter the show, while restricting other universities (including what he called "huge civic universities like Manchester and Birmingham") to only one entry each.

However, the BBC has now hit back against the accusations of Oxbridge bias in a statement, which reads: "All institutions that deliver higher education courses at the level of bachelor's degree or equivalent or higher are welcome to apply to take part in University Challenge.

"Institutions are eligible and welcome to apply to University Challenge independently of each other. All education institutions that design and deliver teaching towards university level qualifications are welcome to apply to University Challenge independently."

The statement continued: "This is not limited to Oxbridge colleges, but also includes around 300 colleges of further and higher education across the UK, several member institutions of the University of London, and a number of UK conservatoires and art schools."

Responding to the statement, Professor Coffield told The Guardian: "It still does not explain why more than 70 Oxbridge colleges are treated as separate universities.

"You don't get a Christchurch college university degree but an Oxford degree. My main criticism still stands and the BBC is avoiding answering it. The balance is grotesque, inequitable and indefensible."

In the latest series of University Challenge, which is currently hosted by Jeremy Paxman, The Sun reported that eight out of the 28 teams that competed were from Oxford or Cambridge colleges, while the previous series featured nine Oxbridge teams.

Glow Stuck

If you were hoping to see Naomi back on WWE television, you’re going to be very disappointed.

Trinity Fatu, who wrestled under the name Naomi, confirmed Thursday on Instagram that she is no longer with the company. When asked if she was still with the WWE, she replied, “No frien.'”

The former SmackDown Women’s Champion and Women’s Tag Team Champion has not been featured on WWE programming since walking out with partner Mercedes Varnado (formerly Sasha Banks) on a live taping of Monday Night Raw last May.

The pair were suspended indefinitely, and veteran announcer Michael Cole revealed that there would be a tournament to crown the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions on Friday Night Smackdown. Raquel Rodriguez and Aliyah defeated Damage CTRL (Dakota Kai and IYO SKY) on the Aug. 29 edition of Raw to become the new champs. Currently, Becky Lynch and Lita are the reigning champions. Varnado, meanwhile, is the reigning IWGP Women’s Champion and wrestles under the name Mercedes Moné.

PWI first reported back in May that Varnado took issue with the outcome of a planned main event, which would have featured her and Fatu in a Six-Pack Challenge alongside Asuka, Becky Lynch, Doudrop and Nikki A.S.H. to determine who would face Bianca Belair at “Hell in a Cell.” Varnado reportedly met with then-CEO Vince McMahon to express her concerns, and McMahon is said to have refused to change his plans for the team. She subsequently left the building with Fatu.

WWE’s official statement alleged that Fatu and Varnado met with former WWE Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis “with their suitcases in hand, placed their tag team championship belts on his desk, and walked out.” (Note: Laurinaitis is no longer with the WWE following an investigation into allegations of misconduct.)

Split Infinite

The classic Monty Hall game show Split Second is coming back to television on the Game Show Network on Monday, April 17, with an updated look and a brand new host.

Here is everything you need to know about the new series.

Where Can You Watch?

Split Second will premiere on the Game Show Network (GSN) on Monday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. ET and will air on weekdays.

It will be hosted by Emmy-nominated actor John Michael Higgins, who currently hosts the fellow GSN game show America Says. Higgins, who recently appeared as Principal Toddman in the Saved by the Bell revival, is best known for his roles in Christopher Guest‘s mockumentary films such as Best In Show and A Mighty Wind, as well as memorable parts in Pitch Perfect and The Break-Up.

Is The Show a Revival?

Yes, Split Second was created by legendary Canadian TV host Monty Hall and Stefan Hatos and first aired as a daytime series produced for ABC from March 20, 1972, to June 27, 1975. Tom Kennedy hosted this original ABC version, with Jack Clark serving as announcer.

A second version of the show was revived in 1986 in syndication with Hall as host and Sandy Hoty as announcer. This short-lived edition ran until 1987.

What Are The Rules?

Three contestants are given a split second to decide which of three general interest trivia questions they can answer. The first player to buzz in chooses first, while the last player has to answer whatever is left.

The players earn points for correct answers. In Round 1, if only one player gets their question right, they score a maximum of 100 points. If two players answer correctly, they each score 50 points. And if all three get their answers right, they’ll each score 25 points. The points are doubled in subsequent rounds.

After three rounds, the highest-scoring player will advance to the bonus round, where they get to answer a series of rapid-fire questions for the chance to win $10,000.

Is There A Trailer?

Yes, and you can watch it below. The clip sees Higgins introducing fans to the show, saying, “I’m hosting a new show. It’s a brand-new show. It’s coming soon, and I know you’re going to love it just as much as I love doing it.”

We also see a brief snippet of gameplay, with three contestants answering the prompts to the question, “Things that rhyme with the word ‘Think.’”

Why Jeopardy! Fans Will Love It

Split Second is sure to appeal to Jeopardy! fans due to its various similarities, including three contestants, a returning champion format, fast, buzzer-based gameplay, and a diverse range of trivia.

It certainly seems like viewers are excited about the show, judging by the reaction on social media.

“John Michael Higgins has “Split Second”?! This is Going to Be a Whole Lot of Fun!” wrote a commenter on YouTube, while another added, “Can’t wait to see this!”

“I love America Says and I’m sure I’ll love Split Second too! Can’t wait!!” tweeted another viewer, while one person wrote, “I’ve been a game show junkie since I was 4, I’ll definitely be watching!! Lol I don’t know how many times I faked a sick to skip kindergarten to watch the Price is Right.”

Split Second, Season Premiere, Monday, April 17, 7:30 pm ET, Game Show Network

Good Homecoming Beantown

Rob Mariano, host of Boston Rob Does Beantown on Hearst Television’s Very Local app, goes beyond city limits for season two, which starts April 13. The show is now called Boston Rob Does Beantown & Beyond(opens in new tab)and sees him mountain-biking at Mount Washington in New Hampshire, chatting up lobster fisherman in Maine and sky-diving in Newport.

Mariano got his nickname on Survivor, where he has appeared on six times, met his wife Amber in 2004 and won the $1 million prize in 2011.

“Mariano will explore land, sea and sky,” teased Hearst TV, including piloting a plane and going up in a hot-air balloon. He’ll also hit the gym and the dojo to take up fencing, Ninja Warrior training, boxing and tai chi — in his Red Sox cap, of course.

Boston Rob Does Beantown & Beyond streams for free on all mobile, tablet and connected TV devices. There are 10 episodes.

“Even local people will discover new things to do,” Mariano told B+C. “If they’re sitting around, thinking they’ve done everything in the city, they can drive 20 miles north, 30 miles south, and find something completely new.”

Mariano promises “a lot more adventure stuff” in the second season. He said the mix is about 30% Boston and 70% beyond. He flies a plane in Maine and sky dives for the first time in about 15 years. “It’s the first time I’ve done anything so crazy since I had kids,” he said. “There was definitely a moment of hesitation but I ultimately decided to go for it.”

Very Local launched in 2021 by Hearst Television.

"We are so excited to have the delightful Rob Mariano taking viewers on more incredible journeys across New England," Very Local VP of programming Laura Ling said. “Rob’s love of the region shines through as he discovers hidden gems, experiences awesome adventures and meets the locals who make New England so special.”

Not another case of Red Dwarf syndrome

The presenter and former Coronation Street actor, 58, was struck with pain during his BBC Radio 5 Music show on Wednesday.

He was unable to grasp a pen, but miraculously soldiered on to finish the gig before his wife, Jackie, took him to A&E later that night.

Craig, who has hosted the Funk and Soul show since 2002, later returned to update his listeners.

The Red Dwarf star said on Friday (March 24): ‘My hands couldn’t grip the pen and my fingers were tingling.

‘I had a pain in the right side of me shoulder going up my neck and into the back of my head.

‘The producer asked, “Are you ok?”, I said, “Not really, but we’ll get through the show”.’

Upon arriving at hospital, the star had an ECG (electrocardiogram) to rule out heart problems.

He then underwent tests for a further 24 hours, with Craig also informing listeners of his five-hour wait to be seen.

‘This is no disrespect or no criticism of Wythenshawe Hospital they were brilliant, they were professional, they were caring, they were dedicated,’ he praised.

He added that he and his wife tried to get some sleep on a single trolley before the inevitable chaos of the A&E waiting room woke them, as a fellow patient was screaming after dislocating his shoulder.

‘So nearly 24 hours in the hospital and they still don’t know what’s wrong with me but at least I’m not dying yet,’ Craig joked.

News of Craig’s trip to A&E comes after his Channel 4 show Moneybags was axed.

The gameshow aired for two series, first landing in November 2021.

Moneybags then returned for a second 30-episode season in August last year, before eventually wrapping in September.

But despite the gameshow being a huge hit with audiences, it won’t be returning.

‘Moneybags has a really big and loyal fan base and having Craig on board just made it perfect,’ a source told The Sun.

‘Unfortunately, Covid has once again played its part causing the production behind it to go bust.’

Craig has previously spoken about his love for the hosting gig.
