The Double Toasted opening toss up story.
Mike Richards will not host the syndicated Jeopardy! after multiple controversies from his past emerged in the last few weeks. He just announced his exit in an internal memo. The show already had started production, which has been canceled for today as the search for a permanent host resumes.
Meanwhile, guest hosts once again will be stepping in, with Richards remaining an executive producer.
“I want to apologize to each of you for the unwanted negative attention that has come to Jeopardy! over the last few weeks and for the confusion and delays this is now causing,” Richards said in his memo. “I know I have a lot of work to do to regain your trust and confidence.”
The news comes on the heels of a Ringer report about offensive and sexist comments towards his female co-hosts and guests Richards had made on The Randumb Show, a podcast he hosted in 2013 and 2014, along with off-color remarks about Haitians and Jews. The controversy prompted the Anti-Defamation League to call upon Jeopardy! producer Sony Pictures Television to investigate and proved to be too serious for Richards to recover from without tarnishing the iconic Jeopardy! brand.
“Jeopardy!” will air the Mike Richards-hosted episodes that taped on Thursday, a person with knowledge of the plan told TheWrap.
Sony Pictures Television issued the following statement:
"We support Mike's decision to step down as host. We were surprised this week to learn of Mike's 2013/2014 podcast and the offensive language he used in the past. We have spoken with him about our concerns and our expectations moving forward. Mike has been with us for the last two years and has led the Jeopardy team through the most challenging time the show has ever experienced. It is our hope that as EP he will continue to do so with professionalism and respect."
Today, he apologized to his staff for the comments, sources said. When Sony announced Richards’ exit as host of the syndicated show on Friday, the studio confirmed that he would continue as executive producer. Yet, multiple Jeopardy! staffers who attended the meeting said that had expected for him to step down as EP as the show is restarting the search for a permanent host. Mayim Bialik, named earlier this month as host of the Jeopardy! primetime and spinoff series, will fill in as host of the mothership syndicated program for at least the next three weeks.
After pausing production on Friday, following Richards’ abrupt exit as host, taping on the syndicated Jeopardy! will resume later this week.
In light of the revelations about Richards’ offensive comments, Sony is assembling teams to work on increasing inclusivity, it was announced at the meetings. Ahuja stressed how seriously the studio is taking the issue and illustrated his personal commitment with a story about growing up as a Sikh in Mississippi in 1970s where he was exposed to racially insensitive comments.
But this happened for the time being................
Good news for Jeopardy fans who wanted Mayim Bialik to nab the main hosting job. Bialik -- who was named as one of the game show's two new hosts, but only for primetime specials and spin-offs -- just got more time in the spotlight. Bialik will fill in as host of the syndicated quiz show now that Mike Richards has stepped down, Sony Pictures Television confirmed Monday.
Production resumes this week, and Bialik will host three weeks of shows, meaning 15 new episodes. The show plans to continue its search for a new permanent host for the syndicated shows following the death of longtime host Alex Trebek.
Jeopardy returns on Sept. 13 with one week of episodes hosted by Richards, which have already been taped.
Bialik's three weeks begin on Sept. 20. Additional guest hosts will be brought in to continue the season.
We'll see how this goes next month.

LA County’s Covid database on Thursday showed 9 positive tests on Stage 18 of the CBS Studio Center (aka CBS Radford) in Studio City. The outbreak is tied to CBS’ Big Brother, which is filming its 23rd season there, sources said.
The nine positive tests for crew members had been registered over several weeks since July 26, with most of those impacted already back at work after being quarantined and subsequently cleared, Deadline reports.
Based in different areas on the set, none of the infected crew members are believed to have had interactions with the houseguests. Production on the show, which employs about 500 people, has not been impacted.
Big Brother, produced by Fly on the Wall in association with Endemol Shine North America, is currently in its sixth week of Season 23. Like all TV shows during the pandemic, the reality series follows all industry health and safety protocols.
The Los Angeles Department of Public Health on Friday updated its page detailing non-residential outbreaks — meaning three or more cases — to include Sony Pictures Entertainment and its Washington Blvd. address.
Deadline hears that the outbreak was among 3 backlot workers and not production-related.
Such news has become a near-daily occurrence as breakthrough cases in Los Angeles have hit 30% with the continued spread of the Delta variant. On Wednesday, the county reported over 4,000 daily cases for the first time since January.

The Peacock streaming service is poised for a very unscripted September, with the release of American Ninja Warrior Junior Season 3 alongside the new competition series Frogger and Top Chef Family Style.
Each of the series will drop two to three episodes on Thursday, Sept. 9, to be followed by weekly releases every Thursday.
Frogger (premieres Thursday, Sept. 9), described as a “fierce and ridiculously fun competition,” features a variety of outrageous obstacle courses or “crossings,” including Frog City, Candy Frog Land, Frogs in Space, Frog Skull Island, Ribbit River and Toad Temple. These physically demanding challenges will ask contestants to dodge treacherous traffic, leap over snapping ‘gators and hop over hungry hippos, in order to conquer the course.
American Ninja Warrior Junior Season 3 (premieres Thursday, Sept. 9) promises to be “more extra than ever,” taking the nation’s top junior athletes and putting them on the world’s most iconic course to compete on some of the most challenging obstacles yet. With the minimum age on the currently airing 13th season of American Ninja Warrior now lowered to 15 years old, and ANW Junior spotlighting contestants aged 9 to 14, many ‘tweens and teens now the opportunity to hone their skills on the Junior course before competing against Ninja Warrior veterans.
Top Chef Family Style (premieres Thursday, Sept. 9) features talented young chefs — hailing from states including Alaska, New York and Hawaii — who sharpen their knives and battle it out to prove that their culinary skills are aged to perfection. “From mastering molecular gastronomy for the cast of Peacock’s Saved by the Bell to cooking in a culinary smackdown for WWE Superstars and creating a meatless menu for an NFL tailgate with the L.A. Rams,” the chef duos are put to the test in a series of creative and suspenseful Quickfire and Elimination Challenges. To avoid elimination, the chef duos will also have to impress culinary leaders Josiah Citrin, Michael Cimarusti, Dominque Creen, Susan Feniger, Chris Ford, Timothy Hollingsworth, Amirah Kassem, Nathan Myhrvold, Nancy Silverton and Sherry Yard, while also showcasing their prowess for guest judges and special guests including Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Jojo Siwa.
