To Quibi....or not to Quibi.....

Opening Theme

Me: hi there cats and kittens and manx cats....and of course, dogs too, we welcome you to another edition of.....

Pierre Kelly guiding you through another week of what's what in game shows. We were supposed to be back in the offices before Easter, but the mayor of Grimsborough extended the stay at home order for 2 more weeks. So you got me stuck at the Rock House and I'm starting to get some more La Croix sparkling water but the cops outside my window zip by my house every :55 past the hour, so I'd be careful not to get arrested without a mask the CDC asks you to recommend when you go out for a walk. Anyways, let's just get into the program with our first segment.....

The Double Toasted opening Toss up story.

One of the hottest new streaming services to ever break out this week is the launch of Quibi. Take the best of Netflix and shrink-wrap it to bite sized episodes like Myspace used to do years ago but with original content and flair. You'll get Gayme Show, Chrissy's Court, Dishmantled and more. Costing about $5, it seems to put Disney Plus in the corner, but one company isn't getting the memo.....

Plaintiff JBF Interlude 2009 Ltd. – Israel seeks a preliminary injunction enjoining Defendant Quibi Holdings LLC from misappropriating Eko's proprietary technology for mobile device optimized 'Real Time Switching'," says a filing made Wednesday in federal court on behalf of Eko, the tech company trying to hit the brakes on the launch of heavily hyped Quibi, the Jeffrey Katzenberg- and Meg Whitman-shepherded mobile streaming service that goes live in five days with a plethora of short-form programming.
"This trade secret technology, which is a critical part of Eko's technology platform, had been shared with Quibi employees under multiple non-disclosure agreements," Eko claims via its lawyers at Goodwin Procter, in language and desired outcomes echoing its March 10 lawsuit that came a day after Quibi first took Eko to court.
If that whirlwind doesn't give you some corporate flop sweat, today's obviously intentional jacking up of the stakes might in this time of the COVID-19 crisis.
"In reality, Eko owns the technology and promptly asked Quibi to cease and desist," an accompanying flourish filled memorandum of points (read it here) from Eko's parent company says of the slow-burn confrontation between the parties over the past few months. "In response, Quibi sent an untruthful letter and then filed a declaratory judgment action," according to the 30-page paperwork submitted to U.S. District Court in California.

But enough of that, let's talk about what Quibi is.

Quibi is short for "quick bites" — though you don't pronounce it "quih-bye" (to rhyme with "rib-eye") but, instead, "quih-bee," to rhyme with the name "Libby." It's a new streaming service built from the ground up for mobile devices, and some of the names behind it include media mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg (who worked at Disney Animation during its renaissance, then started Dreamworks Animation and was instrumental in making such films as Shrek and Prince of Egypt) and CEO Meg Whitman, who is the former CEO of eBay.
There's a lot of money behind Quibi: As The Verge pointed out just last month, the service had raised nearly $2 billion in seed money before anybody saw a single frame of programming. With that much cash in its coffers and with folks like Katzenberg and Whitman involved, you'd expect Quibi to be new and original, wildly innovative, or at least stuffed full of great programming.
Quibi is none of those things. Its central aim is to present short-form programming, so every episode of every one of its shows is under 10 minutes long, and many are quite a bit shorter than that. (I watched a couple in the five-minute range.) Quibi's embrace of short-form content is supposed to be its killer new idea, the must-see that will compel you to pony up $5 a month to watch with ads and $8 a month to watch without.
So what does the service have to offer game show fans?
- DISHMANTLED: a show in which contestants have to try and recreate a dish after having it blasted at their faces via an explosive food cannon. (Tempting the collapse of the singularity even further, "Dishmantled" is also hosted by former "30 Rock" guest star Tituss Burgess.)
- SINGLED OUT: a reboot of the MTV original series from the 90s, hosted by Keke Palmer & Joel Kim Booster. Instead of casting a wide net for singles who just want to be on camera, the unwitting contestants have to whittle down a group of people they already have familiarity with through some social media connection, which makes for some genuine moments of surprise when they're finally revealed.
- GAYME SHOW!: Comedians Matt Rogers & Dave Mizzoni host as two straight-identifying contestants go head-to-head with a celebrity "life partner" as they face a series of physical and mental challenges. The winner of each round is given the tongue-in-check title of "Queen of the Straights."

And that's Quibi, but don't go Binjpipe on you just yet, we've got more after this little commercial.

Here am I.....just watching "I Promise" starring LeBron James and I promise that you should all watch....Xumo. not a real word, this free streaming service is the word when it comes to Family Feud and Buzzr plus dozens more. Znak will exec produce with Conrad Green, who used to showrun Dancing with the Stars and exec produced Fox's My Kitchen Rules, Dancing On Ice exec producer Glenn Coomber and J.J. Watt.

But if the weather gets bad.....try virtual game night with your family and friends. As most of you know by the blog's opening title and it's commercial ads and cues,  I'm a self-proclaimed, self-obsessed, unapologetic, ain't ashamed to show it, ain't afraid to tell the truth, fearless, santicified, holy ghost filled, everloving and everlasting.........Jackbox games nerd. Forever and ever.  One new things to lay eyes and ears on is Broadway Jackbox. With all the Broadway shows shut down until further notice, Andrew Barth Feldman conducts a party with some members of a particular show with a few of his friends. And the response is overwhelming. In fact, it's been raising money for charity but they do it all for the love of the party games. Watch and see why it's becoming a quarantine killer.

Hey MoonlightMirage and Stad St. Fleur, you should come and watch this show. Critical Role ain't got nothing on this.

BYUtv's new comedy competition series "Wayne Brady's Comedy IQ" was created and hosted by multiple Emmy-winning and Grammy-nominated Wayne Brady and his producing partner, Mandie Taketa. Talented young people from across the country compete in a one-of-a-kind performers' bootcamp to demonstrate the highest "comedy IQ." Each new challenge teaches them to be multi-faceted in writing, directing, performing and creating comedic and musical content. Along the way, the teens learn universal skills that can bring them success in the real world. The 10-episode unscripted series was executive produced by Wayne Brady, Mandie Taketa, Queen Latifah, Shakim Compere, Mechelle Collins and Kevin Dill of Intuitive Entertainment (Bravo's "The Millionaire Matchmaker," Lifetime's "The Rap Game") and BYUtv.
"Step Up to the Plate" is a 15-episode competitive cooking series that aired on CBBC, the British children's channel owned by the BBC. In the energetic show, a "Kitchen Crew" made up of children ages 10 to 14 runs a busy restaurant, dealing with obstacles they would face in the real world. Themed menus, including diner, zombie, tropical, medieval and magical, stretch their imaginations. "Step Up to the Plate" was acquired from Cineflix (HGTV's "Property Brothers," History's "American Pickers").

Multi-platinum and Grammy Award-winning music icon James Taylor will serve as the Mega Mentor on Season 18 of NBC's four-time Emmy Award-winning musical competition series "The Voice."
As "The Voice" Mega Mentor, Taylor will join the coaches to mentor the artists remaining from the Battle Rounds and prepare each team for the Knockout Rounds, which will begin airing Monday, April 13 (8-10 p.m. ET/PT).
During the Knockout Rounds, the artists will be paired against a teammate once more, but this time they will each select their own song to perform individually while their direct competitor watches and waits. The coaches alone will choose the winner from their team to advance. Each coach will have one steal in the Knockouts.
In a new twist for the show this season, the four artists that were saved by their individual coaches during the Battle Rounds will not automatically advance in the competition. Instead, those artists will compete in the first Four-Way Knockout. Each of the four artists will receive individualized coaching and rehearsals with their coach and Mega Mentor James Taylor in preparation for the Four-Way Knockout. However, the winner will ultimately be chosen by America. At the top of the final Knockouts episode, voting will open for America to choose which of the four artists moves forward in the competition after their performances. Then, at the beginning of the first Live Show, host Carson Daly will reveal which of the four artists was voted through by America, and that artist will continue to the Live Shows with their original team. .

Another way people are quarantined because of the Covid-19 outbreak is playing live mobile trivia games and this next segment is going to be a slaughterhouse when it comes to playing. We call this.....

The Real Live truth in live mobile trivia news, suckers!

Swagbucks Live was....um..... interesting last month when first of all....

Nobody's hosting it? Well actually it was producer Hal in the studio when the virus hit Los Angeles where it's taped live, but the next day.......

And when the state underwent a stay at home order.....

Hal decided to keep the show going rather than temporarily hold up until it passes, making it sound like a Jackbox game....but with just sound effects and no music.

With Reward The Fan already on hold, The Q decided to keep going. JMo has been in the center of shows when disaster struck and he decided to do it again. But then this happened.....

Mark Ellis of the Schmoedown decided to pitch in as host. In fact, the app decided to make it Monday-Friday with Audrey Reid Couch returning as host of the 6 pm central show. Mark also hosts the newest game mode: King of The Q. A survival mode in which whoever can beat the streak gets the cash.

I know most of you are confused as to what the scoring system in Brackit is but if you're wondering how to keep score, predict and all that, watch this video.

But we saved the very best for last.....

In February, the live mobile game show HQ Trivia shut down after months of dwindling interest and behind the scenes drama. Then on March 29 with no prior announcement, HQ Trivia returned out of nowhere, bringing back popular host Matt Richards and letting over 100,000 players compete for a $1,000 cash prize by answering trivia questions. HQ Trivia will air again on March 30 at 9pm ET and is seemingly here to stay.
However, there are some slight changes to HQ Trivia. For one, the cash prize is much smaller than it was in the past, and for two, there are new gimmicks to keep people playing the game even after they miss a question. HQ Trivia has added random bonuses that players can get throughout a quiz, which include things like extra lives or coins (which will presumably be used to buy power-ups).
HQ Trivia is also donating money to COVID-19 relief efforts, with every cash prize matched and donated. With more people stuck at home than ever before due to the ongoing threat of the coronavirus pandemic, perhaps HQ Trivia will be able to bring back some of its lapsed players who are looking for something to pass the time.
HQ Trivia host Matt Richards also promised that players who cashed out prior to the game show shutting down will get their cash soon. This would likely also convince some lapsed players to return to the game, especially since HQ failing to pay winners was one of the big controversies surrounding the original iteration of the show.

Sadly, that was the real live truth in live mobile trivia, suckers!
